Sub to bread

Recommended Posts

Hi

One food i am missing so much are smoked salmon sandwiches (not sure why but something about Salmon and avo - and can't do sushi to my understanding ever)

Now i am not at all ready to be trying bread etc but wondering if wraps are something people are able to digest? Looking at tortillas or mountain bread or sandwich things

I am in Australia so please if you do know of any ideas let me know if in Aus or not (so i can find substitutes)

I'm interested in know as well. I'm in ths states. I miss carbs and as good as it is, a Dragon [emoji244] just can't live on cauliflower rice. :(

Oh how I miss sandwiches. Every since I was a very young Sin I loved even thought of two soft folds of goodness, wrapped around an even tastier middle I can nibble on...

OK I either need a sandwich or my wife right now. Not sure.

Based on my own personal experience and reading others comments on this forum, your ability to tolerate breads is entirely individual.

Having been banded in the past and now sleeved, my experiences are different with both procedures. With the band, I could tolerate everything. I had no issues with breads, sandwiches, tortillas, cake....you get the picture. With the sleeve, I wouldn't say I don't tolerate bread, BUT if I eat bread I have to be prepared to not be able to eat very much of anything else. I eat half of a sandwich with regular sliced bread (that's the equivalent of 1 slice of bread), but depending upon the items inside the sandwich I still might not be able to eat the entire 1/2 sandwich. I have eaten Buns (think hamburgers), but I do better if I take half the bun off and eat it open-faced. I have not tried thicker/heavier breads like a sub sandwich. Based upon the issue with regular sliced breads and buns, I doubt I'd get more than 2 or 3 bites in. I eat tortillas pretty regularly and I love a good wrap. Most of the time, they're too big to eat in one sitting. Thank goodness they make good left-overs.

My advice: it doesn't hurt to try, but if you do, take it slow. Also, breads tend to be a "gateway" food that leads you down a path to heavy carb eating. I know. I've been there.

Wasa Fiber Cracker Thins

Carb Balance (Mission Low Carb) Small Tortillas, cut into wedges and nuked until crisp on a paper towel

Several low carb breads such as Revolution Rolls (made small to new portion sizes) Here's my recipe version of it. I am biased and think it's the most bread-like: http://fluffychixcook.com/basic-revolution-ary-rolls-low-carb-and-gluten-free/

There are other low carb breads you can buy. Even Sarah Lee has a pretty lower carb.

It's def a YMMV thing. It's way too early to combine bread with Protein. My doc said it's the kiss of death and causes lots of Constipation and concrete in her patients.

Here are some awesome sites to check out low carb/zero carb "breads" and other goodies for when you're ready:

- https://www.thinslimfoods.com/ (they have actual sliced bread products)

- https://www.thinslimfoods.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=34 (here's the bread :P )

- https://knowfoods.com/collections/frontpage (magical things here)

- https://shop.thinkproducts.com/ (more magical things)

Agree, way too early out for bread, but once all healed, I tolerate bread just fine.

I also do sushi just fine. Raw tuna was one of my first soft Proteins. Why is it never again for you?

Because of the rice and seaweed (unless thats a myth) - do you tolerate all breads fine??

I've had salmon and tuna to a tartare when i was on my pure/soft food stage and already with the smoked salmon with the egg

What was it like when you were banded eating the breads? did you eat all types etc??

And you are totally right!! there were times where i would have a toasted sandwich for Breakfast then a sandwich for lunch and with out realising that was 4 slices of bread.

I think realistically i would like to have it as a wrap - more fillings less carbs (and not a fan of burgers but good idea to have it as an open!) do you use flower tortillas or corn???

I know every program is different. But mine doesn't disallow either rice or seaweed, or anything actually. My surgeon encourages low carb, but since I've been successful he doesn't say much to me about it.

There is very little that bothers my stomach. Sometimes food can feel heavy, and it's mildly uncomfortable, but that's about it. Yes, I've had bread (even bagels), rice, seaweed. You name it, I've had it.

I'm not encouraging you to not follow your surgeon's plan, but at the same time you have to find a long term sustainable diet for yourself. I absolutely rebel at the thought of being on a plan that includes "absolute never agains", that just seems unnecessarily draconian and unrealistic (small rant over) :)

Oh, and you could always do sushi with a cucumber wrap

that is so good to know!!! It's been said because with the band - and with the small pouch and the 'gluggy' feel struggles to go down.

I tried Pasta last week and it didn't sit well in the stomach with cramps and was told to try it again in a few months time once the band has healed more and my body is more used to the changes (coming into 4 weeks post op)

Cucumber wraps look so good! gotta buy a tool for that!

Was told after 12-18 months 'can eat anything with caution but be prepared your body may not tolerate' and that rices and breads are things to be prepared not to substitute to not have the way i would once have. but please rant these 4 weeks have been the most frustrating times being into xmas new years etc - no regrets at all but I'm definitely realising how much of my socialising was around food (the amount of times since it's been coffee and walks oml) haha

Ok, I did not notice you were banded, not sleeved.

One of my close friends has the band. She is years out, but still often does not tolerate bread, and sometimes Pasta. I think sushi is ok for her though

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
