Any band to sleeve conversions here?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering about the success of people who converted from band to sleeve. Also looking for people getting the conversion from band to sleeve before the end of this year.

I got my band removed 8/28 and I’m converting to the sleeve on 12/18. So excited!

Just looked up sips. Looks very interesting. What were your results with each band, sleeve, and sips?

Band is basically medical malpractice. According to research, it worked for less than 1 in 20 patients! But it was pushed by surgeons because it was easy and they could charge a lot for it. Personally, I gained 35 lbs while banded

Sleeve has better results - I think I read 60% somewhere - but still, if you look around on these boards you'll find a LOT of posts from people looking to revise their sleeves.... For me, things looked good initially. Lost about 30lbs in 6 months, but then it all started coming back...and fast. I regained 20 in just a few months.

SIPS is the newest kids on the block - some would say it's still experimental - but it's basically a simplified (and therefore the argument goes safer) version of DS (Duodenal switch). DS has been around for a long time and is widely regarded as having the best LONG TERM WLS results. Meaning, you'll lose the weight and it stays off. I'm down about 50 lbs in 6 months and still continue to lose weight.

BUT - and this is important BUT- DS comes with some significant "life-style" issues that you will have to deal with the rest of your life, most of which revolve around the restroom. Do a search for my posts in the DS forum on this site and you can read some of the smelly details.

Something else to keep in mind, each procedure loses effectiveness which each previous WLS. My surgeon who sleeved me said I had to lower my expectations with Sleeve by 50% because I was a revision from Band. Similarly, I was told to lower my SIPS expectations since I'd already revised from Band AND sleeve. So I would be better off in the long run - and with hindsight that I probably was going to fail with the sleeve - if I had gone straight to DS.

Not me but my husband had a slipped band and did the sleeve in April. He absolutely loves the sleeve over the band. He has lost 77 lbs so far and does not experience the puking and heaviness in the chest with the sleeve. He has said that he wished he never did the band as he had great success but was basically tortured with the drawbacks experienced. Good luck with your conversion. I think you are gonna be very pleased with the ease of the sleeve over the band.

🙋🏼‍♀️ I had the band in 2008 but didn’t loose significant weight until 2013. I stopped thinking of it as a solution and started using it as a tool as intended. It was hard but I lost 100+ pounds, kept it off for 3 years and had my Tummy Tuck. Late 2017 I had a full slip and it had to be removed. I chose not to revise at that time because I thought I could maintain on my own. I couldn’t and I gained most of my weight back.

10/22 I had the sleeve done. I am down 36.6 lbs so far (20.22% of my excess weight)

I had the band in 2005. Lived with it (miserably) for 5 years. Had it taken out in 2010. My surgeon offered to convert me then, but I really had enough of living with the band and wasn't comfortable with anything more aggressive.

Fast forward to 2016. I did well maintaining my weight until I had some personal issues in my life. Looking back, I did a lot of binge eating and certainly wasn't making good choices. Gained back all of my weight and am just fortunate that I didn't gain too much more than my original starting weight.

I began looking into the sleeve in 2016, went back/forth for more than a year when I finally realized that I needed help, more help than willpower could satisfy. I was sleeved April of this year. I've lost 68 lbs. Since I've been down the bariatric road before, my new dietary habits fit like a glove and I feel like I've done well. I still have a few pounds to go to meet my ultimate goal with my mini-goal to get into Onderland.

I did develop a little reflux after the procedure, but in all honesty, I had it before the sleeve. It varied in intensity and my doctor believes that it was largely situational (diet, obesity, etc). It's well managed now with Nexium and I'm hoping that I can consider a trial run without it soon.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.
