Pregnancy following Gastric Bypass - Join in 😁

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

Ive been searching for a thread with information on this and have found bits and bobs but I thought let's start a communal thread with as much information as possible regarding pregnancy following gastric bypass.

I am 14 months post op and 6 weeks pregnant 🎉🎉

I spoke to my nutritionist who has advised:

Exchange my regular Multivitamin for pregnacare
5mg of folic acid instead of the recommended 400mcg
3-4 portions of Calcium a day (milk, yoghurt, cheese)

I would be getting a pregnancy letter from her next week so will post more information once I receive that.

My midwife has advised:

I should aim on gaining a max of 14lbs over the pregnancy
I will need additional scans to check baby's growth

I'll update with my progress and other information I gather.

Would love to hear from you regarding your experience, what your nutritionist or surgeon recommended and any other fun facts 😁🖤

I'm in a similar boat, i am 1 year and a few months post op gastric bypass and will be 6 weeks on Wednesday. i got mixed info on what Vitamins to take, my nutritionist said to take a prenatal and some extra b and d while my ob said the vitamins i already take are sufficient. Got the all clear from my surgeon to start trying to conceive at my one year follow up because i had lost more than 75% of my excess weight and had stabilized with my weight loss. @Bariatric_girlie Congrats! on your pregnancy best of luck.

Congrats on your pregnancy. I am less than 2 yrs out and 27wks pregnant. And if morning sickness didnt take over your life like it did mine for the first 18 weeks this should be a breeze. I too searched this site for help and found very little. My surgeon said to increase calorie intake by 300 no more than 400 daily. He said dont worry about the weight you gain during pregnancy as long as your still conscious of your diet. To continue the bariatric Multivitamins, Calcium, and B12 I was taking as well as an Iron tab daily. I found pregnancy after VSG to be much more difficult for some than others. If your OB is knowledgeable about VSG it would be helpful for you. Continue to see your nutrionist.

I am still in my first trimester. In almost 3 years post OP from gastric bypass surgery. I have reached my goal weight and have been maintaining it for the past two years. I would love to connect with others who have gone thru this or is going through it too. Maybe we can help each other out

We are all like the same! Surgery and pregnancy buddies. I’m at 5 weeks, I’m so worried about losing the baby, I already love her/him. I am so happy I have found this!

I found out I was pregnant at 11 months post OP from the sleeve. I ended up gaining 17lbs during the pregnancy. 28 weeks you have to be tested for gestational diabetes. I didn't want to drink the glucola drink so I opted to test my blood sugars. At 34 weeks they gave me the diagnosis of gestational diabetes, because I had slightly high fasting sugars (100, when the cut off is 94) they wanted me to get extra ultrasounds and meet with a high risk OB. Mind you I was livid at this point. There was already talk of being induced early for high blood pressure (130/80s which was norm, for me even before pregnancy) and now they wanted me to go on metformin. I had a growth ultrasound at 35 weeks, nugget was only 5lbs 2oz. I was induced at 37 weeks and 3 days, gave birth to a 5 lbs 6oz baby girl. She's 10 weeks old now, breastfeeding like a champ! I've lost 28lbs, wanting to loose another 50, but not wanting it to affect my BM supply.

2019 - A New Year and a New Start on life!!!!
On 3/14 - I went into the Hospital at 6am to have my surgery <the sleeve>.   My weigh at that time was 278 pounds.   On this day I was in and out of it I don't remember a whole lot I just remember being in a lot of pain.
On 3/15 - They made me get up and walk a few times in the middle of the night and walk doctor came in and I was able to be discharged if I was eating and doing everything on his little checklist.   I went home at 6pm.  All I remember was going home crawling into bed and taking more pain medicine it felt like I got hit in the stomach about 50 times.
On 3/16 - I know they say that walking is the best thing you can do after having surgeries but I was not feeling it at all every time I sat up, I got dizzy needless to say this day I didn't get much walking in and the smell of food just made me gag.  I couldn't even take the pain medicine that was in liquid form.  I stayed in bed for most of the day.
On 3/17 - I did a lot better on this day I was actually able to eat a little bit of Jell-O and drink a little bit of broth.    Still can't seem to take that pain medicine without wanting to gag.   I definitely have been able to keep down water and even had my nephew take a little bit of Crystal Light and some ice chips and mix it in a bullet to make like a slushie.  That was yummy!
This brings me to today 3/18 - I have been trying to drink protein water to get protein in my body. I was able to eat some Jell-O today and keep it down. I also was able to sit up for 5 hours and was able to be sociable again.  I was also finally able to take some pain medicine again without gagging <Thank God>.     Pain is slowly going away.   I have my first one week doctor visit on 3/20 so we will see how that goes

I'm a finisher of a half marathon! Completed yesterday on a beautiful day to run. My hips and Knee are pretty angry with me today, but we finished at 2:19. Not bad for my first half. I was able to run with my wife, so that made it much nicer and easier to get through

Tonight, I swallowed my semi-horse-pill-sized multi-vitamin without wanting to hurl!
So long, expensive chewable multi-vitamin, from now I can buy the cheaper, tablet vites at Costco.
Next: try to swallow the actual horse-pill-sized calcium pills without wanting to hurl....
