No sit ups 1 year

Recommended Posts

Hi. I had my gastric sleeve 4 days ago and have been walking and am anxious to get into the gym. My surgeon told me when I left the hospital no sit ups for 1 year. That blew my mind and I’m working how to get my jiggly belly under control with no sit ups. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Planks will tighten your core up and don’t have the crunching movement.

Low planks (on your elbows) will engage the core. They seem hard, but just try to hold it for 20 or 30 seconds at a time and then add on time each week until you’re holding them for up to 2 minutes.

That’s great advice. Thanks so much. I will try that!

Never heard that honestly, but any exercise then involving your abs needs to be specifically cleared by your surgeon.

As an aside, you probably should wait until you’re at least a month post-op, or cleared by your surgeon) to do them.

And once you can hold for 2 minutes, you can start modifying them (side planks, up downs from high to low plank etc.) to get more out of them. 😀

My team says they usually clear people for whatever exercise they want to do after a month. So. Seconding that "don't do planks until you're a month post-op" suggestion.

Okay makes sense. I wouldn’t want to do anything close to a plank right now anyway. LOL

This is absurd... I was cleared for *ALL* exercises before the 2 month mark... sit ups included. I've also done plenty of weighted crunches, suspended leg lifts etc etc etc. Did you have full open surgery or laparoscopic?

Hey I had laparoscopic surgery. I thought I would be cleared for all exercise after 4 weeks. It’s weird.

Very weird, did they give you a specific reason? I'm curious if your situation is different in some way, shape or form that would support that very bizarre timeline for sit ups.

Nope no reason. Just part of my discharge instructions when I asked about exercise.

SOOOO Weird! I won't tell you to no follow your doctors orders... but pretty much EVERYONE ELSE was cleared for full exercise, zero restrictions, at or around the 2 month Post Op point. If you chose to ignore your doctors advice, just take things slow and stop if it starts to hurt.

LOL. I think it may just be my surgeon. He seems to be overly cautious. I’ll go about it at a slow pace. He said my surgery was routine and had no issues so I see no reason why I can’t exercise like everyone else. Thanks!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
