August 10th, need a little support

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! So I'm just about five days away from my surgery. My liquid diet has been tough, but I've kicked its ass so far. Since I started my weight loss journey I've lost 52 lbs! My original goal was to lose 30 lbs prior to the procedure. Inching very close to being below 300 lbs before the surgery. I'm a man, 5'10, and twenty-five years old. Beginning to feel very nervous about the reality of the surgery. How did you/are you coping with these nerves? Also, does anyone have any clue what ballpark somebody weighing about 300 lbs should expect to lose in the first few months? Know everybody is different and results will vary pretty greatly but think hearing those numbers might ease my nerves a bit. Thank you all for sharing your stories, you've been a lifesaver through this process.

Hi ! Congrats on your amazing start! Wow 52 lbs already!

I spent my time researching here and on the web on tips and expectations, packed....and generally tried to stay busy and not obsess haha. Clean the house, go shopping for just the essentials or whatever else you wont want to do for the first week or so. The days will go by quickly, especially if youre working in the leading days.

For me, surgery was really uneventful. The gas pains for the first few days was the worst part-- so just focus on walking a lot during that time (and getting in water). My taste buds really didnt change but others have experiences with that so dont buy too many Protein Shakes in case you dont like that brand after surgery. Premier Protein is my favorite.

Post here often -- and update us . This community is an amazing support.

You've got this :) . (and its amazing!)

Wow, congratulations on your weight loss so far! What an absolutely amazing accomplishment!

I am just about one week out from surgery, so I can't really comment on what the first few months will look like, but I can answer in terms of the nerves as you approach surgery! It was really tough approaching the date because something that had been theoretical for so long was all of a sudden becoming practical. I found it useful to sit down and do some journaling - about my reasons for making this choice, about what my doubts or worries were and processing/writing through them, about what I hoped to accomplish or try over the first six months or year of surgery, etc.

I know not everyone is a journaler, but if you have someone to talk through the same kinds of questions with I'd recommend it! Or any kind of mindfulness practices where you fully acknowledge the feelings of nervousness or doubt, process why it's happening, and process them!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
