Recommended Posts

I'm having my surgery on 11/26 and am very nervous about how I will feel after surgery. I'm not sure what to expect.

wow congrat! well you will feel like a @@@ right after and will be a lot of pain and struggle with that pain medicine and getting dizzy and stomach pain etc...but no worries it will go by from the moment the pain will get stable. And than is like from the hill down on slides day by day is better and better. I had my on Nov 1st and on 5th went to work.I admitt it was hard and I was sooo tired and weak. I had also a pain shoulder from the gas they pump in you during the surgery but belive that was he most difficult thing for me. I even stop my pain med in Tuesday. Its been week and I am still kind of weak but happy and functioning!

Good luck!

Well, I had it last Thursday morning. When I woke up, I was sore but not too bad. I took the prescription pain medication regularly. I slept in my bed that night with a pillow to support my belly. The next day, I was a little more sore and started to get bloated. My belly was very tight. As the day went on, the bloating started to go away. I slept better the second night. The third day, I woke up the most sore and started feeling a little down that I seemed to be getting worse instead of better. However, as the day went on, I improved immensely, so that day was the turning point for me. The fourth day, I was hardly sore at all but still felt a little tired. The fifth day, I went back to work and had moments of feeling flushed and sweaty and a little dizzy, but just took it easy. Today was the sixth day. I started out feeling a little weak but actually got stronger as the day went on and now I feel almost normal!

I was banded on the 1st as well. I woke up a little sore. I took my pain medication Thursday and Friday and that was it. Saturday I felt great!! A little sore by the port and I was having some gas pain in my chest but that's about it. Tomorrow makes one week and besides being on liquids and the tape and bruises on my stomach I don't even feel like I had surgery. Good luck to you and I hope you have a speedy recovery as well!!!

Day 8 post surgery here.

When i first came to after surgery, the most pronounced pain was in my shoulder from the gas they use to get around your insides. Day 2 was very painful inside, and after that it just kept easing from there.

I was in hospital all up for 2 days and have needed no pain medication since i left, though rolling over onto my stomach in my sleep on my first night back home wasnt pleasant.

I think its a very individual thing. Personally, i tried to keep moderately active after surgery which i believe helps speed the healing process. Oh and by moderately active I mean post-surgery style... short walks around the house, sitting up more than lying down... 200 meter stroll slowly down the street.

Well the fact that I;m working on my computer speaks volumes...

the first day I was very sore although not too bad.. I found the Tylendol rapid liquid and was taking that during the day and the pain meds in the evenings, but today i decided to take the pain meds during the day too. Not as much gas as i had expected, and I;d say the pain is a tolerable 5 to 6 (with 10 being the worse). My worse concern is my cough and mucous in my chest that makes me spit up a lot, I have a call into my primary doctor to see what's up..

I'm attempting to go to work 1/2 days next week, so I won't be too far behind, but I'll see how things play out.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
