how many people never need a fill?

Recommended Posts

I am 4 1/2 weeks post op and still not hungry, still fill up fast and can't imagine needing a fill. I had my first PB today (horrible experience)- so I know that I am not too loose. I know that some don't ever need a fill. Anyone on this forum losing wt without one?

Of all the time I've spent here I can only recall maybe one person who didn't need a fill even after a year or so. (can't remember her name, though...sorry).

Ditto. I've only heard a few people on this site and others mentioning that they didn't need a fill. Of course, it does happen, but it's really very rare. Your surgeon should be able to tell you when you need a fill. If you still have restriction and are still losing weight, they generally won't give you a fill.

I was banded on 09-18 and have lost 26 lbs. My doctor does not want to schedule a fill for me since he said I am still losing weight, yet for the past two weeks the scale has not moved. I am confused because I am still eating the same I feel though if I wanted to eat more I can because I am not feeling full. At this point I think it is just will power. He said I may be one of those people that dont need a fill and just loose the weight but I feel I am being real careful because I want this surgury to be a success. When will he just do the fill this is frustrating and I think I should have lost more weight.

Don't hold your breath. I was doing awesome and losing really well until one day I woke up and it was back (the hunger monster). I could eat anything I wanted and was just as hungry as before. I am eating a bit less than preop with one fill but still can eat anything and WAY TOO MUCH. Just a warning because it totally caught me off guard. BTW, I have gained back all of my initial postop weight.

I'm not holding my breath. I keep peeking around the corner, because I'm sure Mr. Hunger is lurking there wanting to grab me. (just don't know when)

I have a friend whose dr would not give her a fill for 6 months because she was still losing the 1-2 lbs/week. But it was because she is a mature, disciplined person who was very compliant with the proper eating guidelines. He finally gave her a slight fill and it has made her life much easier.

Its really wierd one day I will feel extremely hungry and can eat a lot and the next day it seems that I have just had surgery and cant eat hardly anything. I didn't have a weight loss goal in mind ever. But when I reached 145 pounds I stopped loosing. It is harder for me to stay at 145 pounds but I exersize 4-5 days a week and keep a log of what I eat everyday so I know how many Protein grams and calories I am consuming.

I wonder if just having the band resting against the stomach is enough? I am sure I still have some swelling because I'm not quite 5 weeks yet. But I sure can't eat much. I do pay attention to the soft symptoms that I get and stop eating.

You are doing great Gracie! I went in for my first Fill in mid- Oct I think t was . Didn't get one. Dr Spivak told me they have two patients that had lost over 100 lbs and never had a fill.....so it happens, but as we can see from this board...not often I guess.

Yesterday was 5 weeks and I did notice that I am feeling a bit hungry from time to time. The last 2 days I was able to eat 1100-1200 calories. Maybe the honeymoon is coming to an end?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
