I’m shocking. I am not a really ‘heavy’ overweight person (87kg was my starting weight- 191lbs) and am now 172lbs or 78kgs. I half-assed my pre-op diet but gave into cravings... I don’t have a dietician and I’m a wine drinking, snack eating pizza and Peanut Butter fan. Only difference is now I eat 3/4 of a slice instead of an entire pizza!! I need to be more disciplined though or I’ll end up back where I started. I do eat loads of yoghurt... the purée stage is weird because I feel totally fine. To the point where I forget I’ve even had the sleeve done!! I pretty much eat whatever I want but just chew it thoroughly first. That’s still purée, right??!!

Hmmmm 😓

*Everytime* I go to Starbucks I take a zillion extra stevia packets when I leave because they have a good brand and other places usually only offer artificial sweeteners...

So I’m starting to notice that whenever I cheat and have something with a decent about of carbs, the next day I’ll have lost.. like a pound.

I seem to stall out or lose super slow when I stick to my high Protein foods.

What gives?! I’m not sure, but I’m not beating myself up for having a few carbs here or there.

Ha! Hysterical!

Have you considered drawing a face on it, squishing it up and making it say terrible things to other people??!

Lmao. Great plan!

I don’t cheat. But I have my two beloved extras every day. My granola which I make myself with very little sugar (a splash of maple Syrup before baking), and my 92% dark Madecasse chocolate. It’s not a sweet any more, just a fatty antioxidant.

I allow myself some empty carbs every day, which might be whatever, I will eat a few in n out fries, or some gluten free pretzels, but I always gain ounces or a lb when I do. So I try not to. Not trying to lose any more, trying to maintain. So I just look forward to my dark choc and granola each evening. Makes me happy. I bake all the time and don’t ever eat any of it. I stopped all sweets and breads from surgery and I don’t want them any more, I just want to make them. I knew NONE was the right amount for me. I do eat a bite or two of fruit a day after Protein too. I think it would be too hard if I got back to eating sugar because that craving was too powerful for me. Now I don’t crave it and I want to sTay this way. And I still am human! 😉

Sometimes I think an occasional cheat is actually helpful. Kind of like carb cycling (a topic I barely understand, btw...)

At least once or twice a year I will have a large fried seafood dinner. Whole clams, fish, shrimp and scallops! Of course fries. Usually for my birthday. The first thing I do is divide the platter in half since there is no way I could eat it all; and there is enough for another one or two meals. pizza is a favorite, but at most one slice at a time, maybe every two or three months apart. Rare treats, but I think everyone needs to do a cheat every so often.

today i had my first “real” slip up (i say real because during my purée stage i ate chicken salad which wasn’t approved for me but i tolerated fine). today though, i was making dinner for the kids i nanny, spaghetti and meatballs, which was one of my favorite meals. i ate a turkey meatball as my dinner, but then when i was cleaning the dishes i stuffed like 3 bites of spaghetti in my mouth. it was friggin delicious but not at all worth it. i’m currently curled up on the couch sweating and feeling like i have a brick in my gut. lesson learned. i’m not too mad at myself though, i dealt with these thoughts a lot before surgery and i am one of those people that think mistakes generate success and sometimes we need to learn. i’m more just disappointed at myself for thinking it wouldn’t bother me

I learned that I can handle 1 of the little Andy’s candies at a time. I slipped up and ate one. It’s a sweet treat. I have some in my freezer, but I limit myself I’m not eating a bunch each day. I’m only enjoying 1 on Friday while my kids enjoy their end of the week treat which is ice cream. I can also handle popcorn 🍿😍 but again I’m limiting myself. I want to be healthy I don’t want to be sad. I’ll probably have a small amount of popcorn with my movie tonight with hubby. But my lunch and dinner and Breakfast will all be super nutritious. Instead of beating myself up I get to enjoy a little, while changing my life. Thing is I don’t want to miss out on food. I want to travel and Enjoy that aspect. In moderation, and less often then others but I don’t want to die knowing the thing I’m passionate about I never got to experience.

I figured it would be nice to have a section where we could just confess to some of the potentially dumb things we've done, pre or post op. Just so others can see we are all human. I want this to be kept as civil as possible, where people can own up to things without anyone else chiming in with anything negative, we all know what we did wasn't "right" but I'm sure we ALL have done something we shouldn't have.

I'll start.

I cheated on my pre-op diet a few times. I also like to find loop holes and exploit the crap out of them. I drank beer for a week+ on my pre-op, because it didn't say I couldn't. I only stopped after I was forced to, because my wife asked my surgeon and of course they said "no"... boo. I also ate a whole slice of French meat Pie at my Dad's 60th birthday luncheon.

I cheated on my post-op diet/puree stage a bit too. I ate rice cakes and Protein chips or other veggie chips. Not a lot, but it happened. I "pureed" a steak and cheese sandwich once. I ate a few fried ravioli on my puree stage as well.

This past weekend, I had a beer. My wife and I took my parents out to dinner at a local casino, it's Restaurant week, so we found a good looking location and went out to eat, part of the deal was that you got a draft beer with your meal. So, I had a shipyard summer ale with my grilled chicken parm sandwich (only ended up eating 3 bites of the chicken and none of the bread).

I did all that thus far and nothing bad happened.

I understand the changes are to ensure we stick to our diets, but understanding that we are all human and WILL either slip up or just stray from our diets on purpose like I did. It's good to see that, it's possible to still live and be able to enjoy a few things we "shouldn't" without any negatives happening.

So, what's your WLS confession?

I hate judgment of food choices or how people choose to work their program. We are all absolutely human. We stumble then get back with our plans.

We get to choose how strict or lax we work this. At the end of the day, The only one who has to be happy with your results is you.

Totally just ate one of those fun sized 3 muskateers because i was craving chocolate. My bestie looked at me with her usual side eye, i told her to kiss my skinny ass 😂. And suddenly i feel better lol.
I can’t handle super sweet things like that! Someone brought cider donuts to work for someone’s birthday and I broke off a tiny piece (like 1/6 of a donut) to try... it didn’t taste as good as I’d imagined and I felt a little sick after. Glad I only tried a little!

Wish Precious would settle down, can't cheat when she refuses to tolerate what is good for her in the first place. Hope the exploratory EGD gives us some good answers on the 12th. Until then, strained Soups, broths, Protein Shakes and Crystal light/mio and the other no cal Water friends. Keep with multi-vites,B12, other meds, Zofran and pray for the best!

aww i'm sorry you got sick, i hope you feel better. In my case, it's different. I'm a vet and i was sleeved not bypassed so i don't dump. I also choose to only do stuff like that rarely even though i have no reactions to food.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
