Uncomfortable After Eating

Recommended Posts

Hey, so I'm a little more than two weeks out and just started the blended/soft solids portion of my post-op diet. I've found that my stomach feels uncomfortable (full and a little nauseous) after eating nearly every time. I mean, I just eat a tiny bit -- like, a couple bites of tuna or mashed potatoes or casserole, and I make sure the food is well-mixed and smooth and then chew really well before swallowing, but my stomach protests nearly every meal. Is this normal? Am I just getting full? Is it just going to be a bit uncomfortable to eat from now on?

I'm allowed to eat up to 3 oz. at a time, but I start feeling sick before I manage that much... I never used to feel sick upon getting full, so it's really weird. :(

Its a baby stomach. So try one thing at a time. Try yogurt and if that sits Ok then later try the next soft food. Try sugar free pudding and applesause also is something that goes down easily. Slow down take your time. If your not ready then stay on liquids, broth ect. Make sure your getting in your Protein and liquids. tuna, mashed potatoes and casseroles can come later.

This is a good suggestion.

I had to go to a nutrition class earlier this week and they told us that we shouldn't focus on the amount of food we're taking in, but instead should listen to our bodies. Even though your surgeon says you're allowed the 3 ounces at a time, your body might not be ready for that yet.

Yes, this! Start with softer blended foods. Yogurt, blended cottage cheese, pudding. Don't move on until you're ok with these. And don't think 3 oz. is a requirement. If 1 oz. feels ok, then stay there for a while and move up gradually. I was a couple months out before I could even do 2 oz.

Exactly. Just take it slow. You will be fine. I'm two month out and still taking it slow. I had one new food at a time and see how I do. I've had no issues, no nausea or vomiting.

Seems like maybe too much too fast. Sound advice so far - and I second it— slow it down a bit . And no, the uncomfortable feeling doesn’t last forever but the smaller amount does . At 6+months I’m at about 3/4-1 cup and feel full.

This!

I'm 5 months out and I can't do 3oz by weight.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
