Low BMIers - how fast did you lose weight?

Recommended Posts

I have a BMI of 30 and am getting the sleeve because my co-morbidities, namely BP, have gotten bad. I know people with less to lose, lose weight more slowly. My surgery is on Weds and I'm trying to manage my expectations. I'm 5'7, 195. GW of 125. For other low BMIers, how quickly did you lose weight?

Good on you for managing expectations. We littlies tend not to lose 6-10lbs a week like some of our fellow travellers. I was “low bmi” but a bit higher than you - 5 foot 7, 230lbs.

I had open (not laparoscopic) bypass surgery, and had to have a messy gastric band removal. Off work for 4 weeks (over Christmas - New Zealand summer holidays) and was a size down in trousers and 20lbs lighter when I went back. Averaged 4 lbs a week for the first 8 weeks, 3lbs a week for the next 10, 1.5lbs a week for the next 10. Odd three-week stalls here and there (when I tended to drop a trouser or bra size, so I don’t mind stalls).

It felt like it was slow at the time, especially early on - no-one other than my partner really noticed for 4-5 months, but actually people’s reactions now show how fast this 7 months/80lb loss, has been...

I am 5'6 and started at 229 on 4/16. Today I am 195, so I am down 34 in 12 weeks. I am losing much slower than others but I expected that.

That’s amazing! All of you have lost a lot. I guess the important part is that the number on the scale keeps going down, not how fast it takes. Fingers crossed!!

Look at it this way, the percentage is fairly proportional across the board.

I’m 5’ 5.5”
I was sleeved on 5/17 at 180 lbs.
Today I weigh 159.  That doesn’t sound like a lot of loss when you compare it to the amount some of the heavier folks lose in 7 weeks but I’m only 19 pounds from goal weight now.

I have been disappointed in my weight loss. At my surgery day I was 261 with a bmi of 36. Right now I weigh 239. I called my Dr about it and they told me that I was doing well. I guess we who have low bmi's just lose slower even though we arent eating much. My goal weight is 178.

At 5'6" 2 21lbs sleeved on 8/29/17 I'm down approx 60lbs in 10months. I made my goal weight and happy with results. As you see I didn't lose mega weight but enough to make me healthier.

I was sleeved 6/02/18 so I'm 5 weeks out. SW was 214 and I'm 5'5. Today I weighed 194 so that's a 20 lbs weight loss so far. I think it's going slow but I'm feeling positive because I weigh myself every 2 to 3 days and there's always a loss. :)

That's good to hear. It helps knowing what people with similar starting points are experiencing. It sounds like you have a great outlook! Keep up the good work!

I’m 5’2 and started at 199 with a 37 BMI. I was sleeved 6/6/18 and I am now 169. So I’ve lost 30 total in 5 weeks. My goal is 140.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
