Why would a hernia warrant WLS?

Recommended Posts

I am ignorant to this subject so I was curious as to why a hernia would warrant weight loss surgery; or even a revision.

from what I am reading (or maybe I am reading/comprehending incorrectly). But I see a lot of people saying “I am having a revision because of GERD & a hernia.”

or could it be they are having a revision & a hernia just at the same time?

I met a woman during my last surgeon meetup who was having the surgery for this reason. Anyone that would look at her would wonder why she would be getting it since she's not that big. Turns out you have to be a certain size for some hernia surgeries. With her, she had a couple and they refused to do the most recent one til she had lost all the weight.

From what you're saying, the persons you are referring to are having REVISION, meaning they've already had 1 WLS.

It's not uncommon to revise a WLS due to severe GERD issues. Most frequent I see is sleeve to bypass. They would likely repair the hernia at the same time. The hernia itself would probably not necessitate a revision, but combined with GERD, it's a stronger "selling point" for the insurance to cover the revision.

I fit in your description, sort of. I initially went to visit my surgeon because I have a naval hernia that needs repair. He strongly suggested WLS which for me turned out to be sleeve. His reason was he can repair it but because I'm super fat the chance of it staying closed were slim. He also said I could develop hernias in different areas because of the size of my belly. It's not like I don't need the surgery and my PCP has suggested it to me a few times but my brother had band surgery and it didn't work for him so I figured WLS would work me either.

I was there for about an hour and a half, watched a video about it and even had my 1st visit with NUT as she works certain days out of his office and squeezed me in for an appointment. Walked out with all kinds of paper work and a plan to get my body right for the surgery. That was back in late March, I'm 10 days out from surgery and on day 5 of pre op diet.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
