Before Surgery Concerns

Recommended Posts

My surgery is on July 10, 2018 .. And i'm getting so nervous because my grandma is making me nervous. It took a year and some change to get approved and get the entire process rolling for this surgery.. I did many of the tests required during spring 2017. My most recent test was a comprehensive metabolic blood panel done this past Tuesday.. They did see an increase in my White blood Cell count and in my platelets. They asked if I had a cold. And I do.. but its very slight just some stuffiness in my nose and sneezing every now and then. The nurse practitioner said it shouldn't be a problem at all especially since I don't have any other symptoms like fever... But i find it weird that they haven't even asked for medical clearance from my PCP. Also.. the only labs they asked for are these blood panels.. they haven't done an EKG or Chest x-ray.. is that common before surgical procedures?

also.. I've never had a surgery and gone under anesthesia. (Only c-section)

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thank you!

First off, good luck with your surgery! Hope all goes well.

I don't know about your hospital, but mine did the EKG and chest x-ray as part of the pre-op processing, one week before the surgery. They also did a lot of lab work then.

A lot of tests that are done before surgery depend on your age and overall health. From your photo you appear to be quite young and if you don't have a lot of medical issues, they won't order as many tests as they would for a 50-year-old with uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure.

Hope this helps!

Thank you! and I feel bad calling them to ask a million questions they are going to be so annoyed with me.. lol. But i'll just ask them a few more questions so I'm at ease.

Also.. very true I have no medical issues (surprisingly) and I am only 24.. SO maybe that's why they haven't done too much testing.

Thanks for making me feel better.. lol :)

Don't ever hesitate to ask your questions. You have every right!

Not sure why you would need clearance from your PCP...your surgeon/team are already running the tests.

I would be a bit concerned about not having an EKG & chest X-ray. It helps the anesthesiologist tremendously. Especially if you have a slight cold. I have had each before every surgery I have had. I wouldn’t trust a doctor that didn’t do it (unless it was an emergency).

People walk around with pneumonia all the time. But since you called. Just ask and see what they say

When I was sent for my endoscopy I had to go for pre op testing at the hospital a week before. They did an EKG, blood work, checked weight, BP and maybe a few other things. I have to do the same next Thursday for WLS surgery. After that is done I have to get a medical clearance from my PCP because of my comorbidities. Maybe because you are healthy you don't need it? Good luck though!!! And tell G-Ma to chill and stop freaking you out. This surgery is safer than crossing the street.

Ok for anesthesia ask for the spocoloman patch behind your ear it will save you from soooo much nausea and vomiting that you just do not want if you don’t know if you will get if you have never been under ask for something for the nerves in your Iv it’s worth it and it will calm you down they most likely will place the iv in your hand that will be the sucky part honestly it doesn’t feel Very good but it’s placed there for a reason trust me you want it there fore arm is waaaay worse

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
