Pre-surgery (in 8 Days). Need Advice.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, this is my first time here or any kind of support group for this major step in my life. My surgery is in 8 days! I have found a lot of resistance and negative comments when I talk about it at work or even family. They tell me "just stop eating junk and exercise." Just don't eat too much, don't take the easy way out." A lot of co-workers and friends and even my husband tell me not to do it...But I have tried everything already, this is my last option...just to become healthy and be able to have a normal life again.

Please give me some hints that I can use to get me through this last week and the strict diet I have to follow. I am having a hard time in thinking I won't be able to follow this diet of just liquids for a whole 7 days!...when I'm so use to steak, chicken Etc...

Also what do I tell this people with this type of comments and how do I keep the negativity away?

You will get through the 7 day liquid diet. This is the hardest part in my opinion. Don’t keep temptation around if you can help it. Just know there is a light at the end of this tunnel.

as for the negative people/comments, tell them this is about you, not them & you don’t appreciate the negative comments. Don’t talk to them about the surgery anymore unless they bring it up. And if what they bring up is negative, either don’t respond, change the subject or say you’d rather not have their opinion at this time.

At one point In our lives we have all stopped the junk food, carbs etc. those quick fixes don’t work. It has been proven that weight loss surgery has better long term benefits than dieting. Sure, people can do it without surgery but some of us can’t.

And if next time someone says “it’s the easy way out”, ask them why don’t they walk to work, or sleep on the floor instead of buying a bed; why don’t they cut their own hair instead of going to the salon. We can all do everything ourselves...but sometimes we need a professionals help

Good luck with your surgery. It is really hard (and a shame) when family isn't supportive.

Suggestions for the liquid diet:

If it's full liquids: In addition to the shakes, add some puree-texture Soups like Tomato, butternut squash, etc. I found that my brain reacted much better to savory flavors. It wouldn't recognize shakes as a meal, but a pureed potato Soup? Yes, it was ok with calling that a meal.

For clear liquids: Eat sugar-free Jello. Don't chew it well. The pieces are slippery enough to get down to your stomach ok, but it takes a while for your stomach to break down the pieces, so you feel "full" for a while.

This really is the hardest part. You just have to keep focused on that carrot at the end of the stick. Good luck!

Hello @Crazy4Charlito congratulations on your upcoming surgery, I am still pre-op, I hope to have surgery in August. I haven’t told a lot of people but the ones that I did tell, before they could get their opinion out I said if you can’t be supportive of my decision then I do not want to here what you have to say, I told them that I’m doing this for my health and to have a better quality of life...they respected my decision and got on board real quick. I’m a pretty private person at work so I only mentioned it to a few people that I am close to and knew they would be supportive. Be strong and it’s your business, you don’t have to tell them anything really.

I wish you all the best 🤗 🌺

Congratulations on making it this far! My surgery is in 7 days and I am super excited. I know how you feel, when you have to hear the negative views and opinions of others. Don't let them break your spirit though. You are doing this surgery for you and not for them. Many people don't realize that it's not about what you eat that causes the weight gain. Emotions, stress, depression and mental well being contribute to weight as well. If the people that view your choice in a negative light can't be happy and supportive of you, then they obviously don't truly care about you. People that care, can see where you have struggled and will do their best to encourage, support and uplift you on this journey.
I wish you much success on your journey!!!

First and foremost, stop listening to everyone else. Only you can decide what's right for you, no one else. Their inputs don't matter in the greater picture.

You are going to want to start cutting down on anything carbonated, all added sugars, as much fat as you can, as much carbs as you can, and start working on your Water and Protein intake as well as exercising.

Use the surgery as time to change everything you to need to. The liquid diet sucks, but it's a good set up for post op. Just be sure to follow your PCP and surgical teams instructions, never hesitate to call them with questions, ESP if you are having pain! Walk Walk Walk, Drink tons of water and you'll be good to go.

Congrats on your decision, good luck with your pre-op and surgery and here's to a smooth and easy recovery!
Won't those naysayer friends and family be shocked when you start looking fantastic again!

It just blows my mind that people are so negative on WLS
. I also have surgery in 8 days, June 26.
Everyone supports my decision to get the sleeve. Friends, family, and co workers can't wait till I get healthy.
If anyone was negative I would just ignore them. My wife is my support system. She made goal on weight watchers and will be right by me on this new journey.
HANG IN THERE.
This is for you.

Do what makes YOU happy. It really isn’t for anyone to judge, it’s your body and your life. I know people just give their unsolicited opinion but politely let them know you have made a decision that is best for you and your health and walk away. I know easier said than done.

my surgery is June 28th. I have only told a few people because I didn’t want to deal with everybody else’s opinion. I am also worried about the all liquid diet. I have bought Bone Broth, Protein Water and propel water. Keep positive thoughts and think of the end result.

Ill be thinking of you - keep us posted!

My surgery was June 5th, so I’m exactly 2 weeks post-op today. Honestly, the liquid diet has been easy for me. I think a big help was being on the liquid diet + 1 cup of non starchy veggies a day for 2 weeks pre-op. You lose weight, plus have the added bonus of putting your mind on the right path from the being. Wish you all the best...and like everyone said, this is your chance to work on you. Body mind and spirit... and if people are going to be negative and unsupportive, than they aren’t the best people to have in your circle right now!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
