Does TLBC put you on a pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

If there is a pre-op diet? If so, how long must you be on it before the surgery? Are you expected to loose a certain amount before they operation? What does the pre-op diet consist of?:hungry:

Yes, they do have one and how long you are on it depends on your BMI at your consultation.

It's not a bd one at all - lean Protein and low-carb. Yoghurt, chicken breasts, tuns, sole and green leafy veggies.

Wow, have TLBC changed their pre op diet? I was only done in February and had the pleasure of the cottage cheese and yogurt diet. Mitzy don't worry about what your eat before the surgery too much as the time flies. Hope you make the decision to have the band. I don't think there are very many who regret their decision. Doddie.

I just has my surgery Friday and infamy is correct. The pre-op diet has changed. And they do not require you to lose a certain amount before the surgery. Apparently, the low fat high Calcium diet is the key part to shrinking your liver before the surgery (according to the head nurse at TLBC).

Darn...do you mean to tell me that if I waited 6 months I would not have had to go through 3 weeks of excruciating pain by eating yogurt and cottage cheese? :P

Seriously, I knew Jill was working on amending the god-awful diet so I guess she's done it...great for all the new bandsters.

Mitzy - the length of the pre-op diet is based on your BMI. The higher the BMI the longer you'll be on it. As another member as mentioned it's all about shrinking your liver although the pre-op weight loss is an added bonus. Best of luck to you!

I am surprised to see that some of you are only eating cottage cheese and yogurt. I got my menu for the pre-op diet and went shopping today, it had lots of spinach salad, with balsamic vingrette chicken, Sole ( i have no idea what that is, I guess its some kind of fish) and tuna with ofcourse yogurt/cottage cheese (yuck on the latter) for Breakfast and as an alternative for every meal. I was wondering if super low fat, 0 carb Jello would be allowed?

Anne Elliot: Most of us were put on yogurt and cottage cheese but I understand lately they have been allowing more foods into the pre op diet. All I know is the yogurt, cottage cheese diet is to shrink the liver so that it is manageable. It is easily damaged as the surgeon has to push the liver aside when putting on the band. So the smaller it is the better. I was obese at 303 lbs so it may have been that my liver was excessively large so the strict diet. Whatever, stick to what you have been allowed to use. Merry Christmas Doddie

Hi everyone, but especially MarCar!!! (wink, wink I've met you in the lobby at TLBC)

Yes, the preop diet sucks .... I still can't eat cottage cheese and its been 5 mos. since surgery LOL

I found the post op diet worse though as I was WAY hungry and it was 6 wks as opposed to 2... I can do anything for 2 weeks..

How was everyone's Christmas??? I am not tight, but did stick to only ONE plate of Turkey!!! Kudos to me!!! I usually have 3 plate fulls on Xmas day... so there is an improvement there.

I have a slow leak in my band and am going for a Flouro Xray Jan 7th. After that gets fixed, I'll be on my way again in WL and hopefully catch up to all your great loser's LOL

Merry Christmas Peaches and all others checking in. I too had a great Christmas. Cooked my Christmas turkey and stuck to my one cup of food. 2 oz of turkey, tablespoon of dressing, tablespoon of chestnut dresssing and the rest in veggies. I am so proud before I would have left the table absolutely stuffed to the point of making myself sick. It was indeed a great Christmas. Doddie

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
