What does your typical day look like?

I am very curious to know what a typical day looks like for people! I am only one week out of gastric bypass and I can hardly even get 20oz of liquid down (don’t even ask about protein) that’s non existent in my life right now! I feel fine everyday I take all of my Vitamins and I feel great! So what does your food intake day look like from the time u wake to the time u get ready for bed? If u can add times and amounts please do so! I’m super curious even for some ideas of what I can look forward to eating! Thank you all!!

I'm a sleeve person...wrote this up on another post.

My clinic sets a goal of 1200 calories and 60+ grams of Protein per day during weight loss phase. We can either eat three 400 calorie meals, or six 200 calorie meals...or any combination we'd like as long as net calories are 1200 per day. I personally prefer to do three tiny meals during the day, a bigger meal for dinner, and another tiny meal around 8pm (usually it's got a desert vibe, like fruit or cupcake yogurt, or a chocolate protein bar.)

This is how my day usually works: (with a few different meal options...I like to mix it up a lot...variety is necessary!)

200 calorie Breakfast (oatmeal and coffee with Protein Shake for creamer/an egg and half a slice of whole grain toast/fruit and yogurt/etc)

200 lunch ( 3 ounces of pork chop or chicken breast with green beans/sweet potatoe with pecans and salad/BLT wrap/chef salad with hard boiled egg/homemade veggie Soup and slice of homemade bread)

200 midday snack (protein muffin/half a cup of potato salad/veggie and hummus/etc)

400 dinner (Crab boil/steak salad with eggs and swiss/protien Pasta with salad and homemade wholegrain bread/chicken stir fry/stuffed pepper/ vegetarian chili and cheese on a baked potato/etc)

200 after dinner snack (strawberries with chocolate sauce/watermellon/frozen grapes/cupcake yogurt/oatmeat with pecans and cherries/chocolate Protein bar) I like a little sweet after dinner, and usually do this after I finish my 12,000 steps for the day...sort of my reward.

I eat a lot of really satisfying delicious food. I'm getting an education about portions and making healthier choices. I'm eating a ton of fruits and veggies, lean Proteins and complex carbs.

I LOVE my diet. I feel better on it. Tons of energy. Exercise is a big part of my day, too...and I have the energy to enjoy doing it.

I drink at least 64 ounces of Fluid a day. I have been in the habit of drinking all day and paying attention to drinking a lot because I used to take a diuretic and dehydration has been a risk. Water goes in the car with me anywhere I drive. I drink steadily anytime I'm at my desk or at home. coffee, tea, lots of iced tea and Mio recently, herbal tea, water, etc. If my pee is darker? I drink like crazy.

I typically walk 4000 steps by noon, 8000 by 5pm, and get a full 12,000 by bedtime. 1am?

I do a variety of cardio activities....an hour, three times a week. (in addition to the walking)

Weight loss has been slow and steady:) Getting close to goal:)

Loving life:)

PS...I'm a sleeve, not a bypass...but figured so much of this is universal it couldn't hurt to add to the conversation.

My days are reasonably consistent. My surgeon is very ‘hands off’ with regard to food, Protein, but has done a fair bit of Rea search with his 1700 bypass patients - the average is 800 calories a day a year out, and 1000 long term. He is strictly 3 meals a day, no in between snacking.

I have coffee/protein shake at Breakfast - coffee shot, bit of milk, 30g protein, ice cubes blitzed. For lunch 25g cheese and either chicken/ham or maybe a salami beerstick. And then we have our big variety in dinner. We have mostly eaten with a strong focus on preparing from-scratch evening meals all year, low carb, good protein and loads of fresh veggies. I do use bought (processed) dressings, sauces, sometimes. Like most New Zealanders, we do eat a fair bit of cheese, sometimes home made (oh, making halloumi, mozzarella and ricotta is SO easy) and homemade yoghurt. And that is us - no treats, but we make an evening meal we really enjoy.

BUT. up until the bypass, our BS (before surgery) diet included fairly frequent takeaways, regular brunches. But the worst offender was potato crisps and dip, and binges with ice cream, chocolate or biscuits or other processed ‘treats’.

These have ceased, and I feel way better for it. I crave different food types now, and seldom have sugar cravings - and when I do, I ride it out!

I eat 3 meals a day with a small "dessert" which is typically fruit. My restriction is definitely strong so when I do eat, i can only have a couple of bites before i'm full. I have to eat every 4-5 hours otherwise my tummy starts to hurt. Here are just some of the things I eat.

Breakfast (7:30-8am): Protein Shake & coffee/1 egg and half a piece of toast/ 4 broccoli and cauliflower tater tots.

Lunch (noon-1pm): chicken salad w/ cucumbers for dipping/chicken soup/slice of Turkey wrapped with cheese & a pickle.

Dinner (5-6pm): 3 bean chili/ deconstructed "tacos"/chicken stir fry

Dessert (8pm): half a mandarin orange/ watermelon/cherries

I am 1 month out revision from sleeve to bypass. This is my day:

-wake up around 6am, take my gallbladder, acid reducer, Vitamin D, Biotin, Calcium, multi Vitamin & B12 pills. I take them with Water & drink about 6 ounces of water.

-while I get ready for work, I begin drinking my Protein Drink so the pills can settle easy. I either drink an 11 ounce Protein drink or a 16.9 ounce; I usually and one scoop of GENEPRO to either one to add to my protein. I finish this on my way to work & a bit at work which leaves me at about 50g of protein that i drank and about 17-22 ounces of Fluid drank (depending on which drink). I finish about 8:30 am

-I immediately start drinking my water out of my hydroflask water bottle which is 20 ounces. I finish this about 11:30 am which leaves me at about 37-42 ounces of water drank.

-I then wait my 20 minutes to eat and I eat around 12 noon. For lunch I have about 2 ounces of my soft foods (fish, eggs or soft cheese). Takes me about 30-35 minutes to eat this. The protein varies depending on what I eat so I will guesstimate about 5-8g protein for lunch. This leaves me with consuming about 58g of protein. I then wait 40 minutes to drink again.

-so around 1:40pm I drink 16.9 ounces of water and finish it by the end of my workday at around 3:30. This leaves me at about 53-58 ounces of fluid/water.

-At 3:30 I begin to drink a Premier Protein clear mixed with a crystal light lemonade for the ride home and will finish about 5:30 at home. When I get home I finish the remainder of my meds/vitamins which are Multivitamin, Iron & calcium, anti acid & galladder. This leaves me at about 69-74 ounces of fluid & 78g of protein. I then begin my 20 minute wait if eating.

-so around 6pm I eat 2 ounces of soft food again which is about 4-6g of protein so I will finish my protein for the day at about 84 g of protein. I will wait 40 minutes again to drink water at around 7-7:15pm.

- I will continue to drink water all evening until bedtime which is 10-10:30pm. By then I will consume approximately 20 more ounces of fluid which leaves me at 94 ounces of fluid.

i don’t really count calories but looking back on MyFitnessPal it’s about 430 calories for the day

94 ounces of fluid

84 grams of protein

430 calories

Thank you. I’m having surgery in the fall and this is very helpful. So are you able to follow this comfortably without feeling like you’re starving?

After surgery I have never felt hungry. I get cravings for only the things I see, but no hunger. I think it’s just me missing the fact that I can’t have those foods any longer. But once it’s out of my view, it’s gone

Me neither.

I am 6 months post surgery. I have just been in hospital having gallstones out. For 5 days I have been on the acute surgery list - nil by mouth from 9pm, through the day, until I get sent home at 9.30pm the next day cos I got bumped off the list by more urgent cases. Never hungry, not once. (PS I got the surgery this morning!)

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
