I went in hoping for the sleeve but doc says with my stomach ulcer it would be best to have the bypass instead. Anyone else told this and if so are you happy with the results?

Following as I had the sleeve and am converting to bypass due to damage from reflux. I am nervous to go through this twice!!

I was banded back in 2011, I wanted to revise to the sleeve, but was advised against it, I was revised to bypass on March 21st and I couldn't be happier!

A bypass will most likely completely eliminate your ulcers. A sleeve would not. Your doc is right. I had gastric bypass 6 weeks ago and am elated with my decision.

Thank you everyone. I have 1 more month of appointments left before we schedule my surgery. Looking like it will be in August. Trying to follow the dieticians recommendations. Excited to start this new chapter in my life.

My surgeon explained both options to me and I chose the bypass. Even though it has greater malabsorption challenges, I prefer it because I don't like the idea of a piece of my body being permanently removed. The bypass is a rejiggering with nothing "harvested" from you.

Your ulcer is definitely a good reason to have the bypass. A sleeve can actually give a patient reflux who has no history of it. (Like me). The bypass eliminates the whole reflux issue and will be kinder on your ulcer. By kinder, I mean your ulcer may be gone for good.

Have no reservations. You are doing something wonderful for yourself. Push forward with that mindset.

My doc explained that its because of the reflux he recommends the bypass. I'm just excited about finally getting this weight off. I'm ready to face all the challenges ahead of my.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
