When did you add carbs post-op? Was it a gradual thing according to meeting your goals? Or were healthy carbs always part of it?

I am 2.5 weeks post-op and struggling to feel full with liquids and protien. Had a plain veggie burger yesterday, 5g of protien and 25% of daily Fiber. It was amazing! Finally felt full for a long time.

I will let Creek answer for herself but I know our answers are very different.

I didn’t add them back until I was at goal and in maintenance. And then it was very gradual. I also stayed very low calorie for the whole loss period before adding calories back and her path has been very different there too.

There are many paths to the same goal.

I will ask you, though, if you are on an acid reducer like a proton pump inhibitor. Acid can mimic hunger and I felt hungry until I was on the right dose of a proton pump inhibitor.

Can you please give us a sample of your diet while you were still losing?

Are you asking me?

I have always eaten 4-6 or so small meals per day because my restriction is right.

Examples of a meal during loss phase—

Protein shake
No sugar added Greek yogurt
Roll ups—deli meat w/ultra thin sliced cheese or a laughing cow wedge or a pickle spear or smear of avocado
Grilled chicken dipped in mustard (I have six types in my fridge always!)
Homemade turkey chili
Half a lean burger patty with thin cheese and mustard/mayo
Scrambled egg with salsa maybe with cheese, green onions, mushrooms, onions
Jerky
Cottage or ricotta cheese sometimes with Pasta sauce
tuna or chicken salad with mayo, celery or green onions
Salad with chicken or other meat and goat cheese and a vinaigrette

The nutritional label of anything carbohydrate such as bread, Cereal, oatmeal you name it.. may come with 200% Iron, Calcium and all the Vitamins in the world + 15 years more of life and it’s still a no for me! a few grams of this or that which may be excellent for our health is simply not worth it if it comes with 18 carbs or 15. Ideally I like to stay under 20 because that’s my magic number to remain in ketosis (I use test strips).

Interesting. I don't restrict my carbs. But I remain in ketosis. I'm consuming so few calories, my body has no option but to pull energy from fat.

Like Jess said....post surgical diets are incredibly different. I think Jess's version is more common among American bariatric centers.... and all of her food is stuff I'd eat in a heartbeat...looks delicious. Biggest difference, is that I do a lot of fuit and low glycemic carbs and more plant based Protein.

I've always done healthy carbs. Right after Protein Drinks I transitioned to thin cream of wheat and oatmeal per my approved plan. Mashed potatoes and vegetarian refried Beans were on my soft food approved list, too. Didn't do whole grain breads until later, they were tough for a while.

I know a lot of folks do something closer to Keto. My clinic serves a lot of international clients and lots of them are vegan and vegetarian culturally, so my nutritionist was delighted when I said I'd been doing mayo Clinic Diet. She was like...Awesome, I can work with that!

Here's a sample menu from early on: We're only required to do 60g of protein per day, but it's not unusual for me to hit 80-100.

The big things that make my diet work (I think), are fixed calories under 1200 per day, little to no refined sugar, healthy fats, Fiber, steady blood sugar, lean protein and plant based protein. I don't do much animal fat. Also, my clinic stresses exercise and writes our recommendations on a prescription pad.

I think with our restricted ability to eat a crap-ton of food, we all persist in a state of ketosis. I limited my diet to whole foods, mainly Protein, veges, fruit and dairy. As much as I love bread and Pasta, the nutritional payback (weighed against bulk) is sort of low (IMO). Today my carbs are from lentils, cottage cheese, mangoes, strawberries, and miscellaneous veges. Proportionally, carbs today are 20% of my calories, so I am technically a low carber!! My protein is from lentils cottage cheese, turkey, swiss cheese, and half of a PP -- and I barely cleared my goal of 60 grams. Oh, ETA, I love nuts and seeds, and regularly add them to my diet, but not today, and I feel as though they are best consumed raw as a snack (so I can enjoy them more!!!).

No you don't. I bet you are eating less than 150 grams a day, which is waaaay less than a "normal" american diet -- and in the range of 25% of a 2,400 calorie normal diet. So, you are, in fact, a low carber!!

150 grams is 600 calories a day and Creekimp eats fewer than 1200 calories. So her carbs are over 50% of her diet which makes her... decidedly not a low-carber. ;)

Um, wrong. CreekImp BURNS 2,400 calories a day (probably more -- that is what I burn a day at about the same weight and height, but she is able to exercise more than me). So, in terms of her caloric energy demand, her carb consumption is definitely on the low end of her energy demand. A typical person in maintenance at our weight/height would likely eat AT LEAST 1,200 calories of carbohydrates. A person eating a "fuque ton" of carbohydrates would likely be in a gaining scenario, or eating a very unhealthy, processed diet. CreekImp eats 600 calories of carbohydrates (probably).

And here I thought my thermodynamics classes were a waste of time, LOL! ;)

Oh, pardon me. I didn't realize we were talking about energy expenditure; I assumed we were discussing energy consumption. It seems really strange to call a diet made up of over 50% carbs "low-carb" in an effort to include the person eating that diet in a category containing people who, by contrast, avoid grains, legumes, fruit, etc. But by all means, carry on! :)

Oh, well then by all means, pardon ME, because I thought we were talking about energy balance and weight loss!

There's no need for the attitude  I politely disagreed with your assessment of Creekimp's diet as low-carb. That's all. I appreciate your responses on this thread!

You may politely disagree, but the facts are nevertheless the facts. If your carbs are so low that your body goes into ketosis, your diet is defacto low carb -- there isn't much room for disagreement.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
