Hi my name is Kristina I am from

Boston Massachusetts, I have been reading a lot of stories on here but never posted! Here goes nothing, I am 30 years old and have battled with obesity since I was a young girl (it runs in the family) I don’t have any other health issues besides PCOS! I have a one year old daughter who now since having her I realize how much I can hardly move to keep up with her and get up and down from the floor etc.. I started the weight loss program in February and now have a surgery date for May 30th! Excited is an understatement then comes the nerves. I have seen so many of your success stories on here and I am beyond proud of each and everyone of you. We are all in this together. As I read on and on then got my final surgery date I thought why not put my two sense on this forum and get whatever advice or even cheering on that I need from everyone going through the same thing!! I want to finally be healthier and be able to chase after my one year old and live a longer life for her and myself. Thanks for listening. I will post again soon!

Welcome! I'm new as well and it looks like our journeys will coincide as I started my weight loss program at around the same time. I find out my surgery date on May 8th so I might very well have a surgery date close to yours! I have the exact same feelings as you are having right now. This is a good place to be, a lot of folks going through the same thing. So let loose, we are here for it!

Welcome.

Since you are at the beginning of this process, I would recommend three things.

1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.

2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery.

3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.

Congrats on your decision! You won't regret it, in fact, you will wish you would have done it years ago. I don't have children, which I hope my weight loss will positively affect my fertility after the 12 month waiting period, but I do have 11 month old twin nieces who I see a lot. It's amazing how much I am able to play with them now. I enjoy watching them more now because I'm able to get up and down easier. I also have a lot more stamina. So, I know this will make a difference with your own little one!

Everyone's experience is so different, and it seems like everyone's program is very different as well. My pieces of advice:

1. Build yourself a good support system. Kick anyone to the curb who isn't. At the same time, you and you alone are doing this surgery. You are responsible for the outcome. It takes extreme perseverance to succeed. This is just a tool. Surgery doesn't retrain your brain or unlearn bad habits.

2. Put everything you have into doing it the right way. I make time for ME now. I make time to shop healthy, meal prep, cook healthy, to exercise, and to reward myself for my victories. After you get so far out, you will almost forget you had surgery. I don't think about it daily and I don't have to think.... "You can't have that--- you had WLS". It just comes natural to me now. I just remember that I don't eat those things. But we have to remind ourselves that we are important and this journey takes dedicated time!

3. There can be a real emotional side to this journey that they don't prepare you for. They make sure you are psychologically fit to do the surgery, but I've seen rarely where post op therapy is required. I can't tell you how much things change for the good and bad. This morning, I put on a shirt that hasn't fit in 3 years. It fit.... but I've been wearing baggy clothes for 2 months. Wearing a shirt that fit made me feel bad about myself. It made me feel large. I was so used to seeing myself in clothes that in "my mind" represented my weight loss, because they were big. Its the little things like that. Its emotional. So, prepare yourself for the little nuances that may make you sad.

Good luck dear! I know you be so glad you did this.

Is that why I'm still wearing all my baggy-a$$ clothes? I hadn't really thought about it. (I'm quite a shallow person ;)) I'll have to ponder that.

It’s becoming something serious for me. I don’t like the feeling of a shirt hugging my mid section. I hope I overcome this soon!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
