Learned something new

Recommended Posts

Figuring out the new post-surgery normal takes some detective work and trial and error. I learned something new about myself over the past two days about the cause of the nausea I was experiencing. I never believed that the nausea was actually my body screaming for food because I don't get the classic hunger pangs and I know that I am well-hydrated as I carefully track the amount of liquid I drink. So, I upped my caloric intake to 1200 and started eating more frequently, like every two hours. Miraculously, the nausea has dissipated quite a bit. I am also making certain to get in 2-3 servings of fresh fruit and that has helped as well. Over the past two days, when I weighed myself in the morning I was down a pound each day. I should also add that I think something in the Mio flavor drops must've really been causing some irritation because I started feeling a little bit better after tossing them in the trash and just drinking good, old fashioned H2O.

I did not get very good input from my program's R.D. I found I had to do a lot of work on my own to see what food ideas are good and what are not so good. Also, contrary to conventional wisdom about less sugar being better, I found that adding a daily Kind Protein Bar in helped me feel a whole better. By the nutrition label, it would be considered decent quality at 12g of Protein and 8g of sugar. It just goes to show that each person's body is very different in its wants and needs. Despite adding the Kind Protein Bar, I have not seen an increase in blood glucose on the meter. Plus I discovered that my stomach has no problem with nuts at all and the bars digested smoothly. That said, I don't really want to eat more than one a day.

I'm glad you're figuring out what caused some of your issues. We were all worried about you. I, too, never felt real hunger pangs, I always got nauseous. So my solution, for 57 years, has been to feed nausea. For me, since the surgery, this is the absolutely wrong thing to do. Maybe once I can tolerate more foods, I will revert to that, but not yet. So glad to hear you're doing better!

Are the 8 grams of sugar added sugar or natural sugar? If it is natural sugar than 8 grams isn't a big deal, but I would be careful if it is added sugar. There is a big difference between what your body wants and what it needs. Your body shouldn't need 8 grams of added sugar.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
