Almost quit on Day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

The preop liquid diet was very hard! For me, by day 9 I no longer had the hunger pains. Yes, hungry, but no pains. The purpose is not only to shrink your liver, but to help you detox. Most people who only have to fast for 2 or 3 days say it was harder the first days because they were hungry. I am 5 days post op and while I just started getting hungry, I think it's because my swelling is going down. I just drink some Water or shake and I feel fine.

It will all be worth it. Don't give up!

This is going to sound weird and silly but I haven’t had anything to eat yet. My stomach hasn’t felt like it’s killing me and I’m kinda scared of having a shake and getting that feeling again of I need more and desperately wanting food. kinda like.. let me just leave my stomach alone while it’s not bothering me.

Try to have your shakes at least. You need some Protein. Can't have you fainting missy.

I’m on a 7 day liquid only diet. I’m allowed 60g Protein, and I do get to eat pudding as part of my plan. Right now I’m doing okay physically, besides being tired. It’s all mental at this point, which is hard but manageable. [emoji4]
today has been tough. And it’s only 11am. [emoji15]

I feel that! I went in for my EGD with my surgeon this morning and had a little talk with him. He has everyone do the 14 day Optifast diet. Which isn’t all liquids. It’s 800 calories and 90 grams protein. I have no problem getting the chocolate shakes down, but the Soups are terrible and it’s challenging for me to eat only one type of bar. I literally hate everything on the diet other than the chocolate shake and the Peanut Butter bar.
Sooo... he gave me instructions to buy unflavored Unjury powered (they sell it at his office upstairs of where the EGD was done) and to mix a scoop in with a can of low fat Soup. I’m still pushing 92 oz of Water a day, but I just could not do the bar and shake thing 5 times a day, so I wasn’t getting my protein.
Well, I had my doubts about what unflavored might actually mean, but it’s completely true. And it has way more protein in one scoop than an Optifast item! One scoop has 21 protein vs 16 for the Optifast! I just strain out the noodles or veg or rice and bam! Massive protein. This is a game changer for me.
I’m glad I was honest with him! He gave me other options that would still work for me. Maybe it’s because the EGD came back beautiful with absolutely no issues, but I’m so happy I could marry that man! He’s also quite handsome so.... [emoji23] Of course 48 hours before surgery I have to do only the Optifast shakes, but I can handle that.
So I guess the morale of this story is that a good surgeon will be able to work with you and that there are many different pre-surgery diets to work with.
Best of luck to everyone!

I often see people talking about Optifast, is it sold in Big Box stores, GNC, health foods stores, or only from your Bariatric surgeon? A few seem to love it, most tolerate it, and some loathe it. ,, Just Wondering?😯

Just finishing up day 3 of 14 of my pre-op diet... My diet is 2 Protein Shakes a day and one 3 to 4 oz lean Protein and non starchy veggies meal per day. Surgery date is May 16.

You are so lucky! Most of us have to do straight protein shakes [emoji25]

Guys I’m on day 5 and I can’t believe it. Yesterday was good and the day is just starting for me and I feel good too. I’m so glad that wild burning hunger is gone! I’m not expecting the remainder of the days to be like this but I’m enjoying not feeling so blah while it lasts.

So just wondering about how many calories you all are consuming throughout the day? I'm only getting about 700 and I've lost 6 pounds in 3 days. At this rate I feel I'm going to lose 30 pounds before surgery. [emoji53]

My shakes are 160cals x 5 shakes a day = I’m literally having 800 cals a day. I’ve lost 8 so far but idk I feel that if I drink a nice cold beer or two that number on the scale will change instantly. Doesn’t feel like real weight If you know what I mean but I’ll take it. At least the doc will see the new number on the scale and know I gave it my all. When is your surgery?

Day 4 for me— it has gotten better since day 1, but it’s definitely hard work. There were about 30 min last night where I wasn’t thinking about food, so I consider that a victory! Down 5 pounds so far, which is crazy. Not super surprising since I’m averaging about 600 calories a day.

The start of this journey is making me realize how addicted to food I am. I know that a lot of people talk about moderation of “bad foods” when they return to eating after surgery, but I think I’m really going to have to stay the course 100% to be successful. There are so many slider foods out there....if I can retrain my brain to listen to my stomach when I’m full post op, I’m super excited to see where I’ll be in a year. Excited to learn what it will feel like to be healthier.

Carry on all, we got this!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
