Public Service Employees having or had surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have only seen one post about this and it was from years ago. I was wondering if there have been any Police, Fire or EMS individuals on here that have had the surgery. I am pre-op right now for VSG with a target surgery of June. I have been a career fire fighter for 8 years now and have struggled with weight my whole life. Even after 15 brutal weeks at the Academy I still weighed 285. I have tried everything out there and nothing is working so here I am. I have advised the Officers on my shift of my intentions and the Chief of the department. All are very supportive of me and my plans for surgery. I am having a hard time telling the other guys on my shift about the surgery. A few of the guys I am close with and consider dear friends I have told, but some I have not. I know eventually I I’ll have to tell them, but am hesitant. Anyone that knows anything about Firehouse culture can understand my reluctance. I’m looking for anyone’s personal experiences and any advice you can provide. Thanks in advance.

I'm in public service for my city. However. I am not in Police, Fire or Ems, but my department does support our Police Department. My surgeon had mentioned to me that he had a great deal of police officers go to him for wls. He said many of them were able to be on light duty for a week after. Being the only woman around 30 men in my workplace I believe I can relate to the firehouse atmosphere. Men are harder on each other then women and definitely like to joke around more. I am lucky to work around a bunch of guys who are very supportive and I have shared my surgery story with them all. I know that firehouse guys are like brothers. In your own time and your own way, you will tell who you think you need to tell. I wish you the best of luck!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
