6 days post op- still not up to par

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I should probably be posting this in the post op forms, however, I think it's important for the pre-op peeps to see! I had surgery on Monday, 4/23 and have been in some pretty bad pain. This post isn't meant to scare anyone, and I'm not saying I regret it. I just think it's important that you're not as naive as me!

I went into having surgery literally thinking it would be a walk in the park. Maybe I'd be a little sore, but all around good. Wrong.

After surgery, my pulse at rest was high, so they had to do a CT scan. When you get a CT scan they make you drink this nasty liquid. They gave me 30 mins to drink half a cup. It hurt so bad, I was crying and thought I was going to faint. My pulse is still high, but after blood work and the scan, they determined it was just my body reacting to the surgery. My resting heart rate is still around 120. They said it should go down with time. I also have a very sharp pain in my lungs, they had to put me on oxygen for two days because I wasn't getting enough. I don't remember too much because I was all high on pain killers but the way my surgeon explained it is that a small tube in my lungs collapsed, and although it can be relatively normal, I need to work on taking deep breaths in order to pop the tube back open.If I don't work on my breathing I could get phenomena. My breathing has gotten better but even walking to the bathroom, I'm out of breath and takes A LONG TIME for me to catch it. Speaking of walking, that hurts too. In fact, everything hurts. My neck, back, shoulder, stomach...

I feel like I took a relatively healthy (no co-morbidity issues) body and bang it pretty good. Before surgery I weighted 311lbs, after surgery I was so swollen and retaining Fluid that I was 320lbs. I'm currently 310lbs. I'm never hungry, ALWAYS thirsty. I miss taking big gulps of liquid. The only thing I crave is coke! A big glass of coke with ice and a straw sounds amazing.

I hope everyone has a better recovery than me. Just know that it may not be a walk in the park (although, I certainly hope it is!)

Can't wait to be fully recovered!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
