I'm new to all of this. A little back story. Im a former college football player( Mike linebacker) and army infantryman. My entire life revolved around being the "big guy" in a good way then(6'3" 245lbs.) I injured my back in Afghanistan in 2012 and my weight took a hit from then on. I reached 275 within months of being back. I couldn't even tie my own boots due to back pain. I got out in 2014 and shortly after I over ran the 300 threshold. My breaking point was not being able to play with my little girl's. I asked for help. My heaviest was 382. My weight day of surgery (April 16,2018) was 357. I'm right now at 349. I have no issues with anything OTHER than sleep. I can't fall asleep or stay asleep. I try to be active as much as possible and it seems like it doesn't help. How do y'all sleep? Any advise?

Hi! So I had surgery on the tenth and sleep was a huge issue for me. I would fall asleep in bed or on the couch for an hour, maybe two. But then it's 1AM and I'm wide awake! Some of the suggestions I got were to sleep on a recliner. To be honest that didn't help me. Last night was the first night I woke up once through the night and fell back to sleep quickly. Unfortunately I think it just takes time. Congrats on how well you're doing and I wish you a speedy recovery!

They told me it is a common problem I think it was at least a week before my sleep returned to normal. Put Netflix on and go with it!!!

I hate it!!! Lol in my early twenties in the army it was nothing to run full blast on little to nothing. Now, I FEEL the fatigue. Thank y'all for responding. It's nice not knowing I'm alone in all this. I think I may turn into a hardcore gamer after this sleepless stint lol

I guess it depends on why you are having difficulty sleeping. For me it was that I was a stomach sleeper, which I just couldn't make work for the first 4-5 days after surgery. I found that a couple of Tylenol PM helped my sleep in the unusual position.

Many people find it easier to sleep on a recliner right after surgery. It can take a week or two to begin to sleep comfortably but things should improve daily.

It will pass! I had the same problem the first week. My body was just generally uncomfortable I think, and I couldn't sleep on my side. But once everything settled down, I was sleeping well again.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
