Banded 10/29 and feeling great!!

Recommended Posts

I was finally able to get my band on 10/29. Went into surgery at 9:00 and was out by 9:30. In recovery for a couple hours and was on my way back to the hotel by 2:00 (we live 3 hours from the hospital so decided to stay overnight just in case). Went to Walmart about 5:30 to do a little shopping and walking. Slept great that night (10:00-7:00, then from 7:00-9:00 after a potty run). Did a little more shopping before the long drive home. Only took the prescription pain meds once and have been getting by on liquid tylenol. Haven't had any of the gas pains in the shoulders yet but my tummy is making a lot of noise. On full liquids (creamy Soups, pudding, etc) and haven't been hungry yet. I go back to the surgeon next Tuesday to start advancing the diet. So far, so good. Will keep you posted!!

Wow things really move fast for you.You were approved and banded very quickly. It sounds like your pain is well controlled. I also was banded on 10/29. I was dancing when I came home yesterday but then the pain medicine wore off. I did not sleep well. I have two dogs to take care of and they're like little kids, always getting into trouble if you're not watching them.

Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Anne:

Thanks for the well wishes. I have two children (age 5 and almost 2) so at least they were at school and daycare today. Still feeling pretty good - it's just such a mental thing not going to the kitchen to get a bite to eat. Oh well, just less than a week and I will be on to the mushie stage - who could guess that I would be craving mashed potatoes??? I have spent the last two nights in the recliner which has worked much better for sleep. Last night I spent part of the night on our couch which surprisingly worked quite well. My only real pain is where I believe the port is at but not enough to take anything for it. I had a bad reaction to pain meds a year ago when I had my gallbladder out so I am very hesitant to take anything if I don't absolutely need it. Even childrens Tylenol tastes so awful in the amount I need to take I almost feel worse if I take it.

This is such an exciting adventure - best of luck to you and we'll have to keep in touch!!!! Happy recovery

Robin,

It's been a week! I have one more week to go and then can start pureed food. I go to nutrition class later this week to learn more. I rarely take my pain medicine any more but I love my heating pad! It makes my abdomen feel better than the pain medicine and eases the tension in my back. I go back to work next week and I'm a little worried. I see my doctor on Thursday. How are you doing? Are you weighing yourself?

Was banded on 10/25, went back to work on 11/5. So far things are progressing well. I have no pain and continue with the liquids until my Dr. visit on 11/16 when I hope to move on to mushies.

Hang in there, going back to work actually improved my outlook. It keeps me busy and I don't think about the liquid diet. I have my Protein drink for lunch, a sugar free Jello for a snack and my Water bottle beside me.

At my PCP visit last Thursday I had lost 11 pounds in a week - AMAZING!

Walking has helped with the gas pains, keep moving.....

Things are going GREAT - other than not being hungry (which is such a STRANGE feeling) things are going really well. I went for my followup appt yesterday and have lost 12 pounds which I was totally excited about. They gave me the go-ahead to progress slowly to regular foods (had been on full liquid with some mushie foods) so I had a very small piece of pizza for supper last night and it was wonderful!! Tiny amount of pain in my port site but otherwise healing up well. It's so strange because my stomach growls, but I am not hungry - I suppose it is the larger part of my stomach making the noise but my brain tells me I'm not hungry. I jokingly asked the doctor if he had put the band on my brain because I am just in awe. He was so happy with my progress.

I went back to work the Thursday after my surgery which was on Monday. Got a little tired toward afternoon but I only work a 6 hour day so it was bearable. I am back full steam now.

Anyway, better get back to work!!

My next visit with the surgeon is on Dec 6. He said we will see how I am doing to deterimine if I get a fill or not. His nurse said he usually does the first fill then.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
