Bypass vs Sleeve

How did everybody decide what procedure to go through with (bypass vs sleeve). I keep going back and forth on both of them and just want the one that is the best fit and be the most successful with. I will be turning 30 this year and my excess weight is 111 lbs so ideally I would like to lose 80 lbs. thanks!

I went with my doctor's recommendation for my particular situation. I got sleeved. I probably could have pushed for RNY, but didn't want to deal with the long term supplement issues.

A full up-front discussion with your surgeon is how this gets determined. Prepare to ask your surgeon lots of questions, be very upfront about your health and mind set, and you and your surgeon will define the correct path forward.

I asked 28-specific questions, I expressed my concerns (while the doctor took detailed notes), and then WE both determined that the sleeve was the best course of action for me... now I only need to do my part to prepare. Knowing everything up front has really boosted my confidence that WE chose correctly.

I originally wanted the RNY due to the malabsorption and stronger restriction and I had over 130 lbs. to lose. I had my sleeve surgery in 2011 and my doctor then pushed me to have The sleeve and I did.

I had GERD before the sleeve and it got worse after the sleeve. I also was unsuccessful with the sleeve.

Lo and behold, here I am 7 years later getting a revision to RNY lol. I have absolutely no restriction with the sleeve now

My surgeon said I was a good candidate for either option. But my choice was easy and based on two things:
1. The bypass nearly killed my mother.
2. I’m self pay so I needed the least expensive option.

Sleeve it is!

I am struggling with this same issue. I have seen people have success with both procedures and during my initial consult with the surgeon he said either procedure would work well for me. I elected to go with the sleeve but I am second guessing myself all the time. Hopefully having surgery in June.

The fact that you are young leads me to believe that your surgeon may suggest the sleeve. The younger you are when you have surgery, the more possibility there is to have issues down the road from malabsorption.

Not all surgeons will help you decide which is best unless one is safer than the other for any reason. My surgeon gave me facts but would not help me decide. That was up to me.

I chose the sleeve for two main reasons. 1. I did not want to deal with malabsorption of Vitamins and nutrients when i get older. 2. I don't like the idea that the part of the stomach is left in there with RNY. If there were ever issues such as stomach cancer, etc that part of the stomach is not accessible.

Those were my personal reasons for choosing the sleeve over RNY

And a determined surgeon can get to and reach everything. If he can't get there easily with catheters, fiber-optic tubes and such, its "Cut Baby Cut" Some of their mothers must have been imprinted by Texas Chainsaw or another ripper-horror movie. Fire up the McCullough, I'm going in!

Right. I know that there is a reason that it is left there. Still if there were issues stemming from it, you may have a very hard time finding that out. It is not easily accessible at all.

I just had the sleeve done . Prior to my decision I’d researched the hell out of it and the malabsorption issue was the determining factor. I

I’ve had several friends across the county and a coworker who’ve all had the sleeve with varying levels of success. I was able to ask very point blank questions and got honest answers.
