How many cals/day do/did u consume during WL stage?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I’m curious. How many calories/day do you consume during the Weight Loss stage? I struggle to get to 600, but that probably isn’t safe. Thanks.

I'm not sure what the "weight loss stage" is?

As opposed to maintenance.

I don't know if there is really such a distinction. Eventually your weight decreases to the point where you are no longer burning more calories than you take in, while at the same time you are healing and getting back to what your new capacity will be. I don't think it really works like "ok I'm at my desired weight time to start eating more (or eating worse)." Of course what you are eating will help determine that new equilibrium point.

Of course that's all in an ideal world. Some people will get down to their goal weight, change their habits, put some weight back on and then at some point go back on a diet. Hopefully the difference is that those swings are within 10 pounds of their goal weight.

Right now I’m averaging 700-800 a day. Occasionally I have hit 900 if I’m really active that day.

I think it’s normal for the amount to increase as our ability to eat increases over time.

Great. Thanks. That makes sense. What was/is your daily caloric intake? I ask, because I think mine is too low to be safe. I have a call out to my surgeon about it. I’ve been around 600.

I'm at 600-800, at this point 4 weeks out of surgery. My doctor has basically said that by month 3 I will probably be at 1000+ and 1200+ at six months.

I don't know where you are in the process, but if you are recently out of surgery 600 calories sounds fine. More important is going to be how many calories are coming from Protein.

Thanks. I’m two weeks out, and Protein is close to 90g each day. Carbs are around 25 and sugar is negligible. I have an appt with a bariatric nutritionist next week.

I hover in the 400-500 range. 4 months out. Still losing. My nutritionist says it’s more about meeting your Protein and fluid goals, not a calorie goal.

It ramps up the further out you are. Mine has been around 1,000 for the last couple of months (i’m 3.5 out). Just focus on hitting Protein and fluid goals.

My NUT wanted me up to 1200 by 6 months so I started around 600 calories when I started solids and slowly increased my intake. I now take in between 1100-1400 depending on my activity level and time of the month to be honest. I'm 15 months post op.

At 14 months post op I average between 600-800 calories a day. I feel great and have plenty of energy. Just make sure you Fluid intake and Protein is adequate .

Elsee, look out toward the horizon. can you see that microscopic dot? that is the point in which " calories" will be important.

Water is life

Protein Fat thats it those are the only 2 macro's that your body cant live without

Please note that carbs are not a macro (they are just sugar in fancy packaging)

follow your doctors plan for fluids and protein and try to get that calorie thing out of your head.

your body will signal its needs as you progress out from surgery. just use this time to learn read those signals and then how to meet the needs with proper eating habits.

If you get all that right then the calories will be at the right spot all by themselves.

600 well balanced calories is fine and it will grow slowly as you get further out.

i use fitnesspal app to track my macro's and log my food and i have gotten used to that poor app writing in RED cause it thinks i am starving to death. (lol)

good luck and try to enjoy the journey you are one. its a pretty wonderful one in my opinion

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
