What length is your bypass?

Recommended Posts

Now I will ask my future surgeon😷 this, it's my small intestine after all and surgeon probably will wonder why I want to know?😛💯sounds about right to me but I'll be the operatee not the one performing the surgery.😛

My bypass length was 7 feet. We did not discuss length prior but I trust my surgeon. Yes, the MGB does have a longer bypass length than GBP because there is only one connection.

I guess I'm hop8my it is long enough to do the job and short enough that I'm not a bundle of malabsorption. Do I ask too much?🙊🙉🙈

That sounds completely reasonable to me!

Per the op report, my MGB surgeon bypassed 180 cm / 6 ft. I started out with a low BMI and am currently below goal weight, which is on the low end of the normal BMI range for my height. I look and feel great; debilitating joint pain & arthritis is MUCH improved and my energy level is awesome. I am also super dedicated to taking the right Vitamins & minerals, and I get regular lab work (2x per year) to confirm doses and nutritional health.

How long since your surgery that you’re below goal weight?

I had surgery 10wks ago with the 7ft Bypass and dwn 30lbs plus the 11lbs from pre-op so 40lb also I was a sleeve to mgb revision so not a 1st wls surgery. I’m very content with the results though I can say I’ve dumped 4 times and was miserable, it takes 2 hours for me to throw up each time. I ate too fast but not bad greasy or sugary food. My stomach is finicky some days I know I’ll be on liquids because I’m nauseated all day. Learning each day

I am more than 14 months post-op. I do not dump, which happens to approx. 30% of gastric bypass (RNY or MGB) patients typically after consuming sugar. Nor do I experience Reactive Hypoglycemia (RH), which may show up 1+ years after gastric bypass; it is low blood sugar occurring 1-3 hours following a meal.

Eating too fast or not chewing food properly and then getting the foamies and/or needing to vomit is not the same thing as dumping (aka rapid gastric emptying). Make sure you’re eating small, moist portions of Protein and to eat slowly, and then these incidents should abate. Good luck.

Just ask the surgeon how many feet s/he plans to bypass for you, and why.

I think the answer the average surgeon will give you? Short enough that you don't get malnurished, long enough that it is effective. Perhaps they will tell, you exact measurements, if I were he/she I would not. It smacks of mistrust to me, I would would why they thought I might make a mistake?

I don't think it smacks of mistrust at all. I think it shows an educated, thoughtfulness with regards to a patients decision for surgery. I didn't ask before hand because I didn't know there were different lenghts but length of bypass is an important consideration and choice. My surgeon spoke openly about it with my husband so that we would know what exactly was done during the surgery. I have no doubt he would have been open to the discussion before hand if I had thought to ask.

I would not use a surgeon that was offended by the question. There are numerous good surgeons out there and as a patient, I'm letting them cut into my body and rearrange my guts so I better be able to ask specifics and not have a surgeon take it personally. It is a medical procedure, there should be nothing to hide. Having a bypass is a big decision.

I say ask and discuss with your surgeon all you want. Most surgeons don't have a hard set length and will discuss the positives and negatives with their patients of the different length options. If they won't, find a surgeon who will.

2 Days Till Surgery!   It's time! Time to start my clear liquids! I am prepared! Tomorrow I will only take in clear protein, bone broth and jello for the next two days.   My surgery will be done on Monday, December 9th at 8:00 AM. I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 AM (EWWW) but who cares? LOL. Funny how you don't get all upset about doing things that are not so fun when you are doing it for a purpose! . I don't plan on doing much this weekend. I have one errand to do and after that is over I will return to my hotel room and go into prayer and meditation. Believer or not, you got to do what you need to do in order to get your heart and mind in a healthy place. . I have a Pre-Op drink I ordered that is supposed to really help your body hydrate before surgery. It's not in the photo just because I don't have it in my hands yet. I will put photos of it up when I get it. . All I can think about it how blessed I am to be able to get this done. I know how it feels to be healthy and happy then have it snatched away. It makes this all the more joyful for me. . So, it's time to lay it down and start letting my mind process what we are getting ready to do. . By the way...funny story. My doc said he had to cancel a surgery because his patient said she thought "Mashed Potatoes" was a clear food! Um, there will be no mashed potatoes for me! LOL This is HAPPENING! . Last thought for today: I knew when they drew my blood yesterday it was going to leave a nasty bruise and I was right. I am so sensitive to that kind of stuff.

Cold no.2 since surgery. The funny part is now Ive lost my voice. I feel better in my sinuses now, but my voice is 90% gone. Losing your voice as a person who talks as a teacher for a living is so funny. You feel normal and when you speak, nothing comes out. I hope it goes over by Monday, but if it doesn't oh well. Ill be at school and cant talk to the students. Oh gee darn.

I hope it gets better. I sing and I know how it is to lose your voice. I always get scared that it won't come back. LOL but it always does. Try Fisherman's Friend. It's nasty but it works. You can find it on amazon.

Ohh..I love fisherman's friend..especially the sugar-free ones. Here, we can get it in all the shops. They are strong though.

Got my haircut today and its always amazing how much better i feel afterwards.
i have always considered it an odd thing that i enjoy a haircut so much.
The smell of the barbershop (no salons allowed) and the whole scissors and clippers feel and sound is so relaxing.
I have had the same barber since 1987 and i am not sure how i will handle it if that guy ever dares to die on me. I am pretty sure that the magazines on the bottom of the stack are the same ones from my first visit.
just started Ron Powers -Mark Twain Biography- enjoying it
