Watching videos of your procedure pre-op

Recommended Posts

Did you? Do you plan to? Do you wish you had, or hadn't?

It was recommended to me and I'm currently watching it now. I don't want to link it in case it upsets some folks but it's called "Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY) procedure with Dr. Jon Bruce, FACS, FASMBS" on YouTube, and it's from the channel Bariatric Specialists of North Carolina.

I think it's pretty interesting so far. I'm feeling a little emotional but not grossed out or anything. Just making it more real.

I did! I have no issues watching surgery, and feel that knowledge is always helpful.

That said....while watching the sleeve surgery, I'll admit I was getting antsy...OMG, stay AWAY from that SPLEEN! They're so insanely vascular, and the surgeon has to work very close...and the patient's in the video was bulging ominously forward. One little slip and jab could turn into a dangerous bleed or splenectomy.

So that part....kinda ramped up my anxiety. Logically, I knew they'd be working close to the spleen.....but seeing the instruments nearly brushing the spleen...guh...I was on the edge of my seat. And extremely grateful I had a very type A surgeon who had done over 1000 sleeve surgeries with an excellent success rate.

Seeing the little zipper staple tool in action...was really neato. Way cool! Also liked that the surgeon reinforced the ends and folded over the staple line and secured it with stitches, and it was interesting to see a haital hernia repair....particularly because I ended up needing one.

Overall...I think watching the procedure increased my full understanding of what my body was up against in healing.

I'm glad I watched it.

Was also pleased with the brevity. Doesn't take that long:)

I watched after and thought it was amazing. But I'm glad I didn't watch beforehand because I think it would have heightened my anxiety. But it's very cool what these surgeons are able to do for us.

hahaha. I definitely watched the videos pre-op. It actually helped me mentally prepare for surgery. Watching the procedure didn't bother me at all. To be honest, once you go under for surgery you won't know any difference. Surgery is a breeze as long as you follow your pre-op. Recovery from surgery was pretty smooth for me. I have ZERO regrets. Don't let the videos psych you out. It's all the way worth it. Good luck to you.

I tried I couldn’t I usually watch 600 pound life and other shows but this is to intense which I’m not squimish I think because I’m doing the sleeve mentally it’ll give me anxiety so after my surgery I’ll watch the whole thing. I think it’s cool you have a video about your own surgery just saying lol

I watched it to qualm my anxiety (believe it or not!) and it worked great. Seeing the surgeon working with confidence (even tho it wasn't my surgeon) and doing a great job made me feel at ease. It was less abstract and more real, but in a good way.

It's not for everyone. I could see how it might do the opposite for some people.

Well said!!! That was my same approach and it definitely put things into perspective. I felt more mentally prepared the more I watched the surgery videos. Worked wonders for me.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
