How many days off for weight loss surgery?

Recommended Posts

What is everyone’s surgeon saying on days off? My surgery date is January 24th so I need to put in for my days. I’ve only put in for 5 so far. But what is everyone’s doctors saying? Mine said a week but I’m wondering how realistic that is. I’m a teachers assistant at a preschool and I know for a fact I won’t be lifting or anything but I am just wondering. Thanks in advance!

You will get a myriad of answers to this question. I took six weeks off of work, and I am glad that I did. Physically, I was feeling better after 2-3 weeks, but I needed the entire time to completely adjust to post-op life and work through the food stages. Taking that time off was the best thing I did for myself other than the surgery itself.

My advice is to take as much time as your personal, professional, and financial situations will allow.

Best wishes!

I took 2 weeks off, but could have realistically returned to work after 1. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the time to relax, but I was fine after a few days really. Everyone is different though. Some are sick for up to a month. One of my sleeve buddies was up and walking around without an IV, and ready to be discharged the day after surgery. She had already had 2 kids naturally, so the pain and discomfort was nothing to her so she said.

Anyway, it would be smart to give yourself the 2 weeks off or at least get pre-approved for more time off just in case you need it.

You will be going through a lot both physically and mentally, and you don't know in advance how your body is going to handle surgery.

Good luck to you.

I took 2 weeks but could have probably only 1 I work 12 hour shifts on a physch floor at the hospital

progress starts in the mind

See I think if I know I have to like when I had csection with my son I’ll be okay! My co-teachers are offering to do all lifting and I can always set when I’m tired! Plus I’m off bus duty for 3 weeks!

Honestly this was easier than having babies to me (had 2 csections) take the time you can but you will be fine sooner than you think [emoji170]

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
