RNY 9 days in - record of post surgery progress

Recommended Posts

It is 9 days since my RNY procedure. (A bit unusual because I had open surgery and also had a gastric band removed.)

After the surgery? Well, it iwa a brutal surgery because they used a rib spreader to give maximum easy access, and an incision from rib center down to tummy button. The wound felt ok, but my chest felt like I had been kicked in the chest by a horse. (My family were bemused as I inadvertently txted them all that it felt like I had been licked in the chest by a horse, and they couldn’t understand if that was good or bad!) The joy of open surgery - no gas pain!

Slept rest of day 1 and much of day 2. Self pump morphine allowed a dose every 5 mins, but needed way less. Walked corridor 4 times on day 2.

Day 3 30ml (medicine cup) or Water an hour. Diarrhoea begins - daily once or twice. Don’t trust a fart!. Last morphine dose 10am. Short walk every 2 hours.

Day 4 60ml hourly in the morning, 90ml afternoon. Lear broth for dinner with a tablespoon of jelly for after. Slightly longer walk.

Day 5 Tablespoon of purée fish for lunch, over 30mins - and when it goes down, off home (to a big city hotel). Hooray. Nice, peaceful home, where no one wakes me up every three hours to take my blood pressure!

sleeping a bit uncomfortable, need a pillow ‘under’ my tummy to sleep on my side.

Now I am on day 9. Diarrhoea stopped day 7 and quite normal now. I am going for gentle walks maybe 300 yards/metres but they do quickly tire me out. Can sleep on my side with near comfort now.

Eating: 3 teaspoons yoghurt for Breakfast, slow - 15-20 mins. 3 teaspoons cottage cheese with pesto/mild chilli/flavour for lunch, also over 15-20 mins. Protein Soup from BariatricPal pal for dinner - 8oz over 1/2-3/4 hour. In between, water (20% Apple juice cos I hate water) constantly, and 1/4 chai latte in a cafe today made me feel like a million dollars!

About 250 -300 calories, 30-40g protein and I am up to 6 cups Fluid today. Not enough hours to get in All the food and the liquid!

Eating speed is hard to judge - I was told to expect a lump in my chest if I ate too much or too fast, but don’t get that. So just trying to be sensible - if I AM too fast I get mild sharp tummy pain about an hour later.

No regrets so far - really manageable surgery. Not half as rough as a hysterectomy!!

No weighing yet - till I go home on Boxing Day...

Congrats to you!!!! What a horrifying account! I pray I only have to have one surgery. The idea of the rib spreader is enough to scare me straight. You're a tough fighter and mad props to you!!!

Holy heck!! 21 pounds - fantastic!

As for chewing, my surgeon let’s us have the occasional rice cracker after day 7 - chew it to mush and make it a slurry before swallowing. I had one yesterday - to my great joy!

12 days in. I flew back north to my home today - so of course I weighed in for the first time.

Down 19 lbs since I began pre-op diet, and 14 lbs since surgery. More importantly, my jeans are loose, and my tee shirt has stopped hanging off my belly, instead falling from my bust. Oh yes.

Residual fatigue, little pain. No problems eating but then, I haven’t tried anything stupid size/speed wise. I think I am eating faster than I thought I would, but no problem, just trying to slow down and give my new tummy a chance to bed in. Yoghurt. Cottage cheese (with a few drops of chipotle today - fantastic) and Protein Drinks. 6-7 glasses of Water.

So far, so darned perfect.

15 days in. Today I hit a bit of a wall - think I might just have overdone it yesterday with supermarket shopping and a walk - only maybe 300m up the road, but UP up! So lots of lying about reading in the sun today, and I feel much better now at 5.30pm

Am a little worried about my capacity to eat - without thinking yesterday, I had a huge swig of Water - maybe three or four gulps. Remembered, expected it to come back up - but nothing. In fact, nothin I have eaten gives me any trouble. I am at about 2 tblspoons yoghurt, or same with cottage cheese, over about 10 mins. Easy as. No nausea, regurgitation like the band. No feeling in my tum at all.

Is that right? (Did he really DO the bypass?!)

4 weeks tomorrow. After the rapid weight loss in the first 12 days, it has slowed down - a stall for a week from day 14 or 15, and down 5.5 lbs since - but hell, nothing to be sneezed at.

My eating plan from the surgeon - progress gently as you are able, both content and size. Try for three meals a day, minimal Snacks. I certainly seem to be more able to eat than most of my surgery date buddies!

I am on full solids - but not steak, or anything heavy. chicken cut finely and spiced is a favourite. Laksa with fish flaked through. Good Protein fills me up - I am learning how, when I take it slow, I feel the ‘full’ feeling bear the base of my throat. Never had a regurgitation, and can manage about 50g chicken or fish.

Yoghurt (protein enriched) - feels like I could eat a huge quantity, no restriction. A pottle is 160g - can easily eat one, but restrict myself to half. Cottage cheese, cheese sticks, nuts we’ll chewed. Boiled egg fine, scrambled sits at the base of my throat, takes an hour to pass.

Beans, lentils, chickpeas (chickpea ‘crackers’ and hummus a great lunch treat - good protein, low carb, chew well).

So - really, all going well. Back to work Monday - wearing a bra is a challenge because of the open surgery, scar from navel to between breasts. ‘Lift and separate’ is good for boobs, but not for scars!

Thank you so much for posting. I needed to hear this from someone who has had the same surgery as me. I had the lap band for almost 8 years and then the bypass. I feel like I can anything at any volume too. I have to measure my food or I would overeat. I do not regurgitate my food as well. In fact, I was feeling something was wrong with me. I will be 3 weeks out tomorrow and I am not losing much. I am hoping for a soon loss in the coming weeks (only 8 lbs down). Please continue to post, it really encourages me.

12/12I went against my weekly weigh in and cheated today the scale says I'm 248 😂How? Maybe it's wrong lol I just purchased the scale and it's my first time using it. I'll weigh my daughter to see if it's accurate. I was 255 this time last week well five days ago so I guess it's a real possibility. I'll let you know , I have been very picky about sugars and carbs even though I don't have a huge variety of foods to choose from. I'm super excited and hope everyone is doing great! Got to charge my iPad but I just had to share my happiness 12/15 hmmm I guess this didn't post lol. Well I have more to update when I went to do my weekly weigh in with a scale I know is accurate this Friday I was 244 so even less then my new home scale (which still says 248😹) I am super stoked that all my good choices are paying off. I haven't eaten any bad junk food or high sugar drinks or excess carbs, It's nice to actually see results from a diet huh guys. Unfortunately I put too much mayo in my eggsalad purée and I'm nauseous 🤢But to happy to let it bring me down. Hope everyone is doing good and happy

The sad dejected truth that you are not the same size in a plush padded vs. Lacy unlined bra. And should have known it. Sigh.

I see what you did there!

Also, boobs are dumb. I'm pretty sure I'll be tucking mine iento my socks in a few months!

I see what you did lol

They still kinda work but only by accident 😓, I couldn't find my exact size so I decided to play around with band/cup manipulation. But now I know padded bras may be adding a full cup size I don't own...

I've been counting on that for years!

I went to my 4th NUT appointment this week and I was absolutely surprised that I had actually lost 9 pounds from my last appointment.  I can get a bit obsessive when it comes to scale use so I've decided to only do pre-op weigh-ins at my monthly appointments.  It saves me a lot of anxiety, I think.
I actually was prepared to go to the appointment with excuses on why i gained, so this was a big win.  I didn't actually add much activity to my routine, the only thing I changed was having protein shakes every morning instead of just weekdays.  I really thought my extracuricular snacking activities were going to cause an issue, but I'm not going to let that make feel like it's ok to snack late or keep eating cheese non-stop.   Also probably helps that I had the stomach bug a couple days last week.  I think my organs liquified and came out....yuck...

Stalls are the WORST.  I know they happen, but I am still disappointed.  I've been the same weight for over 2 weeks.

Girl, that stall will break. Give your body a minute to realize what's happening and catch up with itself...it'll kick back in gear! 💓
