Freaking myself out

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I was sleeved on the 14th of November, so I am just shy of a week post op. I have been sitting here reading lots of posts and have gotten myself freaked out...

1st thing is that I haven't lost any weight yet, today was day 5 post op, my husband says my body is still swollen and adjusting but I would like to see the scale move.

2nd thing is I am a little worried that I am overeating. My nutritionist gave me a goal of 100 g of Protein and I am hitting that. I am not hungry, I sip most of the day. I read a post where people were talking about only having 4 oz at a time and that is what worried me. However, I am not really "eating" yet as I am on full fluids only. Is it ok that my Protein Shake is 8 oz or thinned Soup is 8 oz? It takes me about an hour to drink the shake and less for the soup since it is warm. I am right at 64oz of liquid for the day. I just mostly sip things all day, never feel full or hungry. Is this ok? Just don't want to screw this up.

Had my sleeve on the 13th. I had actually gained weight when I got discharged from the hospital (was like day 4) but since then the numbers have started moving a little. I think once you settle into a routine you'll see the numbers decrease.

100g of Protein a day sounds super hardcore. I struggled to hit 40gs my first few days, now I struggle to hit my daily goal of 60. If you could manage 100g of protein a day that's amazing.

The 4oz at a time sounds like bullcrap to me.

If I'm having something thick (like protein) I think 8 oz over an hour sounds reasonable. I don't think I could handle 8 oz in an hour but I'm also mixing mine with a variety of stuff to make it palatable and enjoyable to eat.

But if I'm having broth or Powerade zero I can easily have put down 10 oz in half an hour.

As long as you're hitting your appropriate numbers and goals and not having side effects I don't think it matters how quickly or slowly you drink something. The going slow is usually so you don't end up nauseous or vomiting or with immense pain.

I had my surgery 11/7 and haven’t lost much at all. It’s supper depressing. I gained then lost. I keep crying cause I had a very dangerous surgery to save my life and I lost more on my low carb diet then I have since surgery.

I came out of hospital 5kg or about 12lbs heavier than when I went in. They pump a lot of Fluid in our bodies and it takes a while for that a swelling etc to go down. After about a week it started dropping fast. I am 12 weeks out and had two major stalls due to further surgeries and Constipation but I have still lost 100lbs. Don't be discouraged stick to the plan and trust the process. The 4oz people are talking about is when you get to puree soft or real food. 4oz of Protein like fish or chicken can fill you up quickly. drinks and Soups are different because they are thin they just constantly trickle though. Don't be tempted to jump ahead or miss a step because you need time for your stomach to heal whether it was sleeve or bypass. Good luck guys hang in there!

Guys, trust, you will see just how much you've lost when you go for your post-op doc's appt. It's completely normal to gain weight due to all of the fluids and lack of movement during your hospital stay and a bit after. Just try to walk as much as you can, even standing up for small periods of time and doing some arm stretches help. Also, remember to get in your Water, it definitely helps.

At 5 days out you still have swelling, do not worry about that whatsoever. Give it 7 more days and hop back on the scale and see what it says! :D You are still fresh from the process, let it do its magic! You are still in the liquid phase, and those will slide right through, so you should not feel full until you start your puree phase and even then it won't be like you normally feel. You really should not be eating to get full anymore, eating for that full feeling is going to help to get you back to where you were. The main thing you need to focus on is what your body is telling you and working on not drinking too much. Right around 4-5 oz is where you should be focusing on, I am 3 months out to day day from surgery and have slowly learned to stop eating for the full feeling. When you do get full trust me it will hurt, and for quite some time. Almost feels like a heart attack, its HIGHLY uncomfortable. If you just do what they have told you then you should be fine, it is going to be harder to screw this up at this point than you think, let your body heal and get somewhat accustomed to what is going on and you will start seeing the pounds fly off. I did not notice the scale really move until about 7-10 days post surgery.

100g of Protein a day sounds amazing, please share your techniques... Also you WILL loss it may not come in a direct path but it will come, maybe it would be helpful to recognize some of your non scale victories like looser sleeves thinner facial planes etc...

I am not sure what the OP is posting but I can tell you that I was drinking high Protein Shakes, if it was not at least 30g I did not drink it until I knew I had at least 90 grams in. I am not going to advocate any particular brand but one type I used was easily available at Walmart as well as most club stores like costco. It has 30g of Protein in 11oz, which is not hard to get down. It was a little more "loose" than the shakes my surgeon sells and came in more flavors than just chocolate and vanilla, which my tastebuds were well over after the first week of being on liquids only. It is possible you may just have to do a little research, for the best protein for the smallest package.

My first two weeks post op was only liquids. It was full time job just to get 64oz of liquids in each day. I didn't have to worry about Proteins or Vitamins. I don't know if I could have gotten in 100 grams of Protein at that stage. It was Water, herbal tea, broth, sugar free Powerade and sugar free ice pops and Jello.

It isn't bull crap. 4 ounces of DENSE PROTEIN.. Not liquids. Liquids slide through.

Op - Try to not weigh till you go for your first check up you will be surprised. Just focus on doing what your doing and you will be fine. I would even hold off weighing for 2 weeks allow your body to settle down.

The OP is in the liquid phase. We're not talking about solids

I'm in the same boat as you! Clear Liquids for 2 weeks with about 20 gr of protein as my goal (protein water). The second phase, moist and mushy phase is when i have to focus on getting to 60 grams of protein. Seems there are many variations for post op phases and length of time. I'm approaching my second week post op now.

So, the scale is moving -yay!

As far as the 100 g of Protein, I am mixing unflavored Protein Powder with thinned Soup and having a Protein Shake with 2 scoops every morning. I am allowed pudding in my liquid phase so I have some protein pudding that I made. I use Isopure protein powder.

I am fully aware of that. I'm making it clear that the 4 ounces rule does not apply to liquids.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
