Scale going up! What's going on?

I'm a little over 2 weeks out from surgery. I lost 21lbs over that two weeks I was thrilled. I know there will be stalls but now the scale is going up for the last 3 days. I'm doing exactly what the doctors tell me to do. Help!

Most likely you still have gas and swelling. It will start going down! Keep following the doctors instructions.

21 is significantly above average. A portion of that wasn't fat, but Water instead. Now that you are getting rehydrated, the water weight comes back.

The scale will regularly go up and down by a few pounds. If you weigh every day, you'll get used to it.

How I minimize the psychological impact for me is I write down my weight only once a week. I weigh every day and keep in mind the lowest number I saw that week. That's what I write down.

I'm 7 months postop and have only had 2 weeks that logged a zero loss. I'm sure if I didn't do it this way, half my weeks would be zero losses! Lol. (The other half would be double).

something as little as too much sodium can cause an uptick in weight. not something I would worry too much about, just stick on track and things will work themselves out

I was having g the sane problem and wondering the same thing. I got sleeved october 23rd. I thought things were going well, lost 20 lbs my first week. 2nd week with Protein and a whole different story.... Now I'm really discouraged. The weight isn't dripping anymore. It's hardly changing at all. :-/

20lbs is average for the whole first month. Usually a huge rapid loss like that is followed by a lengthy stall while the body catches up. Totally normal.

In a weird way, it is possible.. but it's only because the body can now pause and work on healing (now that it's getting some materials to build with).

This might be the key to the notorious "3 week stall" that it seems everyone has... the first 2 weeks are just liquids and the third week has a bit more substance.

Question that might sound silly but I’m still going ask :-) If you go on a pre-op diet, does the water weight not get lost in those eg: 2 weeks? And everything thereafter is then fat? I know, it’s naive of me to think that 21lbs in 2 weeks is pure fat but if you are on a pre-op does the water weight not get lost there?

If you are following your plan, you are still losing bodyfat...stall or not. You lost 21 pounds in two weeks. That is a lot of weight, and your body just needs to catch up. Drastic weight loss can stress your body out, causing it to produce more cortisol. This will cause your body to hold onto Fluid. You are still burning fat, but this fluid displacement might make it appear as though you aren't losing anything. Eventually, your body will release the fluid, and you will lose again. It is completely normal.

Keep following your plan, and you will be fine.

You do lose a lot of water weight at the beginning of a diet, it's true. The postop period is almost a "start over". Everything is thrown into chaos with the shock if the surgery, IV fluids, lack of calories, and many people can't make their fluid goals for the first week or two, so there is dehydration.

The body cycles through Fluid unbelievably quickly. So when a person puts on 3, 4, 5 pounds overnight, it's just fluid. Maybe they were dehydrated, and now it's replenished, or perhaps they're storing extra because of stress (like Drop said).. there are lots of reasons for it.. just part of the process...

OMG I have the same issue. I was sleeved 10/17/17 and today marks 3 weeks since surgery. I lost 26 lbs including the pre op but hit a stall about 10 days ago. On Friday I weighed myself and went up 3 lbs. I'm so upset I want to cry. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I follow the plan to the T and still. I'm seeing my surgeon on Friday, will see what he says.

Hey there! First of all, congratulations on getting the surgery!

Now, from what I can read, it looks like you're weighing yourself every day. The best advice I can give you is to NOT do this. Choose one day of the week (e.g. Monday) and from that point on, you only weigh yourself on Monday morning. It's not good for you to be focussed on the numbers, because it is only normal your weight will fluctuate from day to day (water, swelling etc.). Therefore, it is important for yourself and to have a good indicator of whether or not you're doing well, to only weigh yourself once a week. Trust me, you'll drive yourself crazy getting on that scale every day.

If you've gained after a whole week, ask yourself what you ate or what it could have been that made you gain (e.g. if you've eaten fat/sugar or if you're holding Water because you're about to get your period etc.).

If you've lost after a whole week, good! Keep on going like this!

If you're stalling, don't worry, you're body is going through a big change, it needs time to adjust to the new you from time to time!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
