I don't want to rain on ur parade or lessen the wonderful rate of weight loss of 68lbs in 3 months, but that's not generally the norm, especially if u start out having less weight to lose. Generally u may lose big the first couple weeks but after that, it slows down to a few lbs a month...yes, i said a FEW lbs a MONTH. It can be agonizingly slow. Hell, even me having over 100lbs to lose, I'm right at about 2 months post-op and am only down 23lbs. I hate that my weightloss is going so slowly, but i just have to keep with the plan and eventually my body has to let go of the fat. Somone told me once, and it made sense, that yes, everyone's body is different...but, know that the people who are losing lots of weight quickly are excited so u see a lot of those types of posts. And it IS wonderful. But many folks who are losing super slow aren't posting, so u can get a skewed idea of really how slow the weight loss can truly be. Just keep that in mind.

My highest weight was 289, my current weight is 251, and my surgery is in 10 days. I’m feeling a little bit terrified, but finding some comfort reading different posts. I believe I’m doing the right thing, but it is a huge life changing decision, for sure! I’m 58 and want to enjoy my senior years. I lost my husband of 29-years 9 years ago to cancer. I’m ready to date again, but first want to focus on being healthy and secure with me. Let the adventure begin!!!

good luck to you[emoji173] I hope your
Surgery goes well and you meet somebody wonderful [emoji173]

I've never been able to lose weight easily, trust me I know I won't be one of those people that gets magically skinny in 6months, I just want to be healthy for my family. This isn't the magic fix it's just a tool in my opinion.still excited

I wasn't either, in fact I was insulin resistant and couldn't take the meds which made it even harder to lose weight. I never lost more than 5kg dieting and I regained them every time and added a few more kg.

Each body is different, it's not important how fast we lose the weight as long as we lose it. So whether you are a fast or a slow loser be happy you are losing at all.

Right now I'm not losing as fast as I did the first few weeks but I keep seeing the scale go down and for me that's a win.

I was 255.6 the day of my surgery, which was 8 weeks ago today. Week 6 I hit my first stall and understood why so many people tell you to up your protein/calories to break through them. The scale didn't move again until I figured out how to consume more. You're going to hear this a million times, everybody is different. I decided to be less concerned about my actual weight post op. I didn't put it on overnight and I know it won't come off overnight. But, I also know as long as I am doing what I am supposed to be doing, getting my Protein in, my Vitamins, staying hydrated and moving around more, my body kinda has no choice but to lose weight. So I'm just going to let it do it's thing and do my best not to stress over it.

When u say that u had to consume more, can u give a bit more details surrounding "more"? Like if normally u consumed 60-80g of protein/day, what did u up it to? Same with calories, what did u up them to?

Thanks for the addtl info!

Hi there. I was initially told to stay between 50-60g of Protein and told that going over that for my frame (I'm only 5'3) would do more than just salvage lean muscle mass, that instead if I was taking in too much excess protein it would turn into glucose (sugar). I was drinking 2 Premier Protein shakes a day and getting 60g of protein but I wasn't hungry so the rest of my intake on most days was just herbal tea. At 160 calories x2 I was just keeping my body in starvation mode and it wasn't happy with me. I tried throwing in a two step Protein Bar for another 15g and things felt a little better, but honestly it wasn't until I ditched the second shake and replaced it with real food (a can of solid white albacore tuna mixed with avocado, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt and pepper and placed by the forkful onto salt and vinegar protein chips - this is two meals for me) did my body start to feel better and my weight started to go down again. I wonder if it wasn't so much the Protein Shakes as the nutritionist saying that your body readily absorbs more protein from real food than shakes or bars. Regardless, this was my way out of my first stall. I expect many more!

I just got the rny 3 weeks ago!! I was 238-242 lbs starting out and am 5’8”. My BMI was only like 36, but I’ve had super high bp (one reading was 210/109 pre-op despite being on bp meds). Happy to say that I’m off all bp meds & have lost 21 lbs total so far (15 lbs preop Fluid diet w/ no sodium broths, and 6 lost since after surgery) for total of 21 lost so far.

So happy for you & already able to post? That’s awesome! I had my RNY 3 weeks ago & was way too drained to post anything for a full week at least! Anyway many congrats to you for making it so far! I was 227 lbs on surg day & only managed to lose 6 lbs after surgery so far!? It’s crazy! I hope your wt loss goes quicker than mine! I havn’t been drinking Water as it’s made me sick, so today finally choked down 20 oz so far (& it’s only noon) so I’ll def be getting in another 20-40 oz today. If you can, sip all day on water to increase wt loss. Congrats!

Good luck!

I'm pre-op too, 25, my weight when I saw the surgeon in August was 260. I'm working on my 6 months with a nutritionist, hoping for a late February date!

I'm still pre-op too... not sure when I'll get a surgery date as things are done a little differently in Canada. I'm currently hovering around 259-261. My goal (and my surgeon's) is for me to be down to around 240 before surgery.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
