Just found out I have sleep apnea and can't adjust to CPAP Machine

It took me awhile to even get my hours in for my insurance to approve for me to keep the machine anyway! After I got my hours in..sadly I stopped using it. My surgeon says I need to bring it for the day of surgery so I guess I will be using it then. I did sleep better when using it to be completely honest,I have the mask that goes over my nose..and I called the other day to get a new mask and he told me I had to get re authorized by insurance. Sooo thats out the question. I would say keep trying it though! You may get use to it. I am going to start using mine again!

how many hours logged on the CPAP before your insurances approved you guys?

This thread is older, but I just wanted to tell you to hang in there with the CPAP. After you adjust to it, you won't be able to sleep without it. I used to be a big napper.... I could fall asleep anywhere (not overly tired all the time, but it didn't matter where I was if I wanted to take a nap). Now, the only place I sleep is in my bed with my CPAP. It was a really rough 30 days. I went through 5 different masks and saw my respiratory therapist probably a dozen times. The key for me was the right mask. As far as the plastic smell, always wash your masks, hoses, tank, ect. before you use them. I wash mine with baby Shampoo and it helps tremendously. There are so many health risks for people with untreated sleep apnea. It is so important that you use the CPAP as long as you have sleep apnea. My husband also has it and he is as thin as a board. Therefore, you may always have it. It's best to embrace the CPAP. Trust me, give it time and you will love it. You will feel like million dollars. Also, as far as the headaches.... your pressure may be too high. That's what happened to my husband. Our pulmonologist said that too much pressure can cause your blood pressure to raise and when it falls it can cause a headache. Make sure that you speak with your therapist about this. One last thing, is your machine set to "ramp up"? This means that the pressure slowly increases, vs. just blowing right off the bat.

I hope you have gotten your issues fix with your mask. It took me saveral masks before I found the right one. A full mask reduces the feeling of the blowing air in your nose. Can your therapist read your daily results through MyAir ..... this app is a life saver because it can make them and you aware of problems...good luck!

For me, the insurance just requires 'being treated'. The big deal is for the surgeon and the anesthesiologist-- they want a minimum of one month. This is to safeguard the procedure and reduce complications during surgery.

@Tess530 Thanks girl! :D I just wondered, if I'm shootin' myself in the keester, by getting a sleep study this late in the game. :460_circus_tent:

Also, as a side note: When talking to my cardiologist, he recommended that he also do a stress test (Not required from insurance) as he's seen anesthesiologists turn away patients right before surgery if the patient has any heart issues. I have HBP.

Thanks for that FYI. I have HBP too. :( My cardiologist said that he would pass me without a stress test if I could walk up 2 flights of stairs. LOL. I told him, with a hip replacement, I probably could! :D LOL. So I think I will ask for a letter from them as a release?

That's what I did, too! One from my primary and another from my cardiologist with a current EKG and stress test, just to be sure. Can you imagine?!? All that worked up nervous excitement just to be turned away last minute? No, thank you.

I got an auto adjusting CPAP with a range so it starts slow and then it ramps up based on my breathing. I find the over the nose mask works best unless I have a cold and cant breath through the nose. Then I use the full and some chapstick or vaseline for dry lips.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
