Self Pay Banding

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have a question for those of you who self paid for the procedure. I have Cigna and submitted all my documents to the 10/11/07. We have still not heard from them (they said something about taking 30days).

Anyway, my BMI is 41, I weigh 235 and I am 5'2 with no co-ormobidities. I am a size 16 (comfortably) with most of it around my hips, thighs and butt.

O.K, my question...I am so anxious to get this done (my surgery date is Oct. 29th). At this point in my life, I am 29 and have been overweight all my life, and I cannot afford to do another six months of anything- although I don't think that will be the basis of denial from Cigna. I won't be fat at my 30th birthday.

No matter what, I am getting the surgery done even if I have to pay for it. So, I'd like to know how much it costs, for those of you who had to pay out of pocket? In addition, do the fills cost extra?

I can't imagine living another day of being fat and since I have made the decision to let this body go, I am ready to pay no matter what.

Any information regarding self paying would be great.

Thanks

I checked in Danbury CT and lapband procedure is $18,500 for self-pay. Fills are $250. Hope this helps. Prices differ from state to state from what I understand

Here in Arizona there are at least two doctors offering the procedure for $16000 self pay. That $16000 includes lab work, the procedure and the first year of fills.

Call a few doctors in your area and see what they offer.

I have CIGNA, but was denied by them 3 times, and thus I am now scheduled to for surgery in Mexico this week. My BMI is 36 and I don't have co-mobities that CIGNA recognizes. (I do have asthma and arthritis in hips and knees.) First denial took over 30 days after I called and bugged them about the 30 day time frame. The next denial took 15 days after I submitted additional info, and then final denial took 15 days. They say I am "too healthy" to have the surgery.

CIGNA will likely ask for you to show documentation that your BMI has been 40+ for the past 5 years. It would be a good idea to contact all doctors (even OB/GYN) and get copies of your medical records to prove your weight history.

Also, CIGNA is SUPER STRICT about the doctor supervised diet. It has to run for at least 6 months, and you MUST visit the doctor every 30 days to document your progress. Commercial programs such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig don't count as supervised programs. You doc meeds to diagnose you with "Morbid Obesity" (not just Obesity) and put you on a diet plan. You will then need to submit all those doc records of the diet plan.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. Mexico is simply not an option for me...

It's not that I don't trust their great doctors, but once you buy a ticket and make all the extra trips, when iy's all said and done, you will have most likely spent all the money you would have paid if you would have done it here.

My fee is $2745 for the surgeon, $1217 for the anesthecia and $9000 for the hospital. It come up to a total of $13000. And it's been done in one of the best hospitals in the country, GW- George Washington Hospital in DC.

Can't beat that...

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
