weight gain while in the hospital?

Recommended Posts

Yep, girl, I came home last Wednesday (10/10) and was shocked to see I'd gained seven pounds!!! (However, you'll find it gone in about two days!)

Hey here's something else, I was so shocked when I got my trays in the hospital that evening and the next morning and on them they had (1) ginger ale (2) straws and (3) full strength cranberry and apple juice!! I didn't remember about diluting the juices 50% and sure enough, the next morning I was so-o-o-o nauseous.

Talk about no-nos! The nurse said they must've just looking for "clear liquids"--so beware, fellow bandsters, you have to watch out for yourself!! :omg:

They gave me full strength juice too ..and no Water to mix it with, plus some sort of broth that smelled gross and hot tea ..with two packets of real sugar with it. I was kinda surprised and had hubby get rid of all but the juice, which I mixed with Water that he went and got for me.

I am super surprised you were given ginger ale ..I understand ginger soothes nausea, but I was told even flat soda is a no-no and straws are a no-no too ..so yes, you're right ..watch out for yourself.

I actually gained 9 pounds in 3 days post surgery. Then it started coming off. I could actually tell it was coming off because I suddenly started peeing like a beer drinker!

Good luck. It should come off soon.

Yeah, you don't buy IV fluids, you just rent 'em...

Yep, I gained 7 pounds in the hospital - still waiting for that to disappear! And I was also given a straw and super strong juice - you do have to watch out for yourself!

I'm not freaking out or anything, but it's been 12 days since I ate anything other than Protein drinks and Water. When I left the house for my surgery on the 16th I had lost 7 pounds on the pre-op diet. When I got home I was five pounds higher!! Now, five days since surgery and 12 days with no food at all, I am still only down by four pounds from beginning my pre-op diet.

Summary - I've only lost 4 pounds in 12 days with no food? ? Is this normal? When will the scales reflect my low cal/low carb/high Protein diet ?

I know this all takes time, but ordinarily (prior to surgery) if I didn't eat much for a couple days 2 or 3 pounds would be gone... just like that! (snapping fingers)

Don't be worried. I didn't expect it, but gained 9 pounds from surgery - Fluid retention. It will start coming off - just stick to the post op diet and you should be fine. It may take a few days to come off, but all of a sudden you'll start peeing like crazy! Good luck.

Thanks Sue! I have stuck religiously to the post op diet ... drink, drink, drink, drink. Good thing this stuff tastes good. Carnation instant Breakfast and ProtiDiet, lots of Water and some milke along with my Vitamins, etc. I'm doing well and feeling stronger every day.

I appreciate your comments! I'll be waiting ... ;-)

Hi,

I lost 14 lbs on the pre-diet, but I gained 14 lbs while in the hospital. I looked like I was pregnant, but it was all the IV fluids, and lots of gas I lost in the first week home. I was banded 9-28 and have lost 28 lbs so far and am thrilled. You will be glad you did this. Good luck!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
