My surgery date for gastric sleeve was on Sep 22, 2017. Going on 11 days pos op.

I have no idea what to add to my diet. Up until now, I’ve just have Water, broth, Jello, popsicles, Gatorade and apple juice. I’ve been scared to jump into the next stage. Any suggestions on what I can add this week. Are the Premier Protein shakes ok now?? Hunger is really starting to set in and I’ve been extremely moody. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 🤝

Also I have only lost about 5 lbs since surgery. Is that typical? I lost 8 lbs. in my 7 day pre op

I had my procedure done in Mexico with virtually no after help at all. I’m feeling so lost.

Did your surgeon send you home with a list of foods to eat and how long to wait before introducing foods other than liquids? I've learned that different surgeons have very different ideas about introducing foods......the "when" and "type" and "how much". My surgeon had me on liquids for 21 days.....then onto the Proteins shakes and very soft foods for another 21 days and then introduced eggs and other things. It took about 2 months before I was eating very small amounts of chicken/fish, etc. I'm a big believer in following your surgeon's advice since it's so different depending on the doctor. I also had my surgery in Mexico in August of 2016 and am very pleased. You'll get as many different answers as you do responses......it can be very confusing. I would recommend you listen to your surgeon and listen to your body. I found it was pretty evident when I ate something I shouldn't. I also think the very best thing you can do is to keep your portions small.....eat less but more often and make good choices. Wishing you luck and much success!

You will lose faster when you dump the apple juice. It is just sugar.

You should have a list of things to eat and when to start eating them from your team.

You know when you are discussing with your surgeon about havin surgery why dont people ask for a plan there an then?

You should not be in the next stage usualy . mine was 2 weeks liquid, 2 week puree 2 week soft, then normal food, i was cleared for normal food in my 2 week soft phase as it was making me sick soft puree food lol

If you’re still exclusively in the liquid phase you can do like 1/4 juice and 3/4 Water for the flavor and volume but less sugar. I’m almost 6 weeks out and on solids so I forget when I started Protein Shakes but I believe it was almost right away. Few days at most. I could crack open my binder if you want photos of some of the diet plans I was given.

An average plan consists of Week One - liquids popsicles, Jello, broth including clear Protein Drinks aiming for minimum of 60 gr Protein for women and 64oz of Water every day always. Week Two - full liquids - cream Soups, etc but same goals of protein and water. Week Three - add some texture like blended cottage cheese, still using shakes to get adequate protein. Maybe refried beans....Week Four - soft foods - scrambled eggs, etc.

It just progresses as you heal and tolerate texture and solids after chewing and chewing. Sometimes it takes longer to tolerate certain foods.

And after you can tolerate more and more solids always stop liquids 30 minutes before eating and at least 30 minutes after eating.

I had my surgery in Mexico and was given a post-op diet, so I don't agree with the above statement that Mexico patients don't get a post-op eating schedule. I had my Surgery on the 9/20/2017, and I start phase 3 (Soft Food) in a few days. I will be on that schedule for two weeks before moving on to hard foods. I think the key no matter what phase you are on is taking small bites and chew and when you think you are done chewing, chew some more. I am finding that when I chew eggs using the above technique, they go down on their own. I think that will happen with any food as I move through the phases.

It would be improper for anyone to tell you to do anything except what your DR. has told you. I don't care how many years someone has had the surgery or how successful they are. You need to listen to your DR and follow the plan they have set out for you. Noone in this forum knows what technique or suture line they performed on you. Based upon that only your DR can tell you what phase you should be on and when. I love this forum for general questions, but when it comes to your surgery, you should leave those up to your surgeon and follow their guidelines.

Your hearsay info is totally incorrect. I was given a very detailed food plan and post-op diet requirements from my Mexican surgeon. I selected a very qualified surgeon that provided excellent info and support pre and post surgery, and I’ve had no complications.

As well, my surgeon spoke great English.

I did get some paper work (3 pages) with after care instructions and a 5-6 week break down to follow, but it isn’t detailed at all. It doesn’t tell you how many ounces you should have at once, or much less any brands of shakes or foods to have. Since I haven’t had any problems swallowing, or getting any liquids down. Or even having any discomfort what so after I drink, I’m scared to add things because I don’t know how much to add. So if I do have a Premier Protein drink how much of it would I drink....I’m assuming the 11 oz would be too much but I just don’t know.

Where did you get your VGS done at?

I got very minimal information after surgery. About 3 pages that aren’t detailed at all.

As well, my surgeon spoke great English.

I’m glad you got excellent information and support pre and post op. I unfortunately did not. I feel like once the surgery was done I was sent on my way to figure out what I had to do on my own. No follow up appointment whatsoever ever Nothing.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
