Hi, guys I had my vsg on 9/18/17. I had difficulty with Fluid intake so I was in the hospital 4 days. I’m home now and I’m doing much better with fluids, but I can only intake Water and some Vitamin water. The cream Soups are too salty with dilution and the sweet shakes are too sweet. I don’t want either and I have had to force myself to take in 1/2 a cup a day of Protein from Unjury. I know it is no where near my goal. I have my first post op appointment on Monday 10/2/17 and was wondering if I just focused on getting in water until then will I be fine. I’m a little frustrated and the pain is horrendous if I attempt to do anything but lay on my back. Any positive input or suggestions is badly needed. Thank you all and congratulations on your successes.

Well i do understand...have you tried chicken broth? I heat it up in a coffee cup and sip with a spoon, it takes a bit but can get it down. As for sleeping, I like to sleep on my back sometimes but I took all the pillows on my bed and stack them up behind me as if I was in a hospital bed to raise me up and I can sleep that way. But sometimes I will turn on my side and put a pillow in front of my belly to lift it up a little bit and I can sleep on my side. Did the doctor give you pain pills to take home with you? The only other thing I can tell you is it will get better just try to stick it out. I'm not an expert but I'm finding different ways to deal with the after effects of surgery.

Thank you so much. She gave me liquid pain meds, but they just make me sleepy. It really does nothing for the pain. I will try some chicken broth but I’m concerned with not getting enough Protein in. It’s literally making me gag.

Try putting in the unflavored injury Protein into the broth, I do that if I don't get my shakes in...oh I did pick up some sugarless Jello, Amazing! I haven't had Jello in years and to ReDiscover the taste of it I try to treat it as a special snack during the day. I know you're saying that some things are sweet I picked up the sugar less popsicles that we used to eat when we were kids that come in Orange strawberry and I can't remember the other flavor today and I ate 1. It wasn't bad but it still tasted kind of sweet to me but I could deal with it

I ordered the flavored ones from Unjury because I didn’t realize how quick I would be over the taste. So I ordered the unflavored today, so I can get the Protein in. I tried Jello on my pre op and that really helped. I will make more when I feel up to it, and I have some sugar free tropical popsicles to eat.

It is very important for us to get that Protein in somehow. Otherwise you will start getting very weak. Have you tried some Isowhey unflavored Protein Powder? If you are still gagging , maybe you could take Zofran 30 minutes before taking a shake at least for the first few days. Soon you will be in purée phase and have more options.

I have this same problem as far as getting in Protein. I also had surgery on the 18th but came home on the 20th. It does get better, but I have no idea how we are supposed to get in 64 ounces of Water plus 60 grams of protein a day. My largest incision hurts like heck but is getting better. I don’t take the pain meds either cause I don’t want to be constipated and don’t want to sleep all day either. Stay positive. I was told get in my water and then worry about protein.

Yes I’m focusing on the Fluid intake process. It’s more of the taste I’m disgusted by. Just hoping my unflavored Protein gets here quick. I’m very excited about getting to the puréed phase.

I was told the Protein Shakes count as my Water also. Cuz I question drinking 64 oz of water and getting in 60 grams of Protein how are you supposed to do that. My dietitian was very helpful

Oh I wish! They don’t count towards my water intake. I do think it’s pretty much impossible, so I do what I can. The nurse made it very clear, as does our patient handbook.

Try Protein Water. I drank the Atkins Lift personally and it was the only way I could get my protein in and it counts toward liquid count. I know there are a couple other brands that make a water as well and GNC has an iced tea Protein Drink.

Protein shakes count as water, per RD.

Thank you. I’m heading to my parents house. The pain has become so much. Still pushing liquids. Doing anything makes me weak so quickly. I’m still pushing!!

My NUT said shakes do not count as Water, she said shakes plus 64oz of water.....just sayin'

I am sure it's going to be rough. I have stocked up on sf popsicles, but need to look for Atkins water.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
