Protein First???

Recommended Posts

This is the first of multiple times I have read to eat the meat first, then veggies, then carbs!....Maybe this is what I am doing wrong!!! But I asked my dietitian and she said it didn't matter....Can you tell me why your docs suggest to eat meat first????

Anyway.....about starting with the Protein first. I asked my dietitian about that and she said she'd never heard that....but I have read it several times on here....Maybe there is truth to it cuz I have been eating the veggies first and then the mushy carbs....then the protein; because I figured I would get more veggies in that way.....what do they say is the theory behind eating protein first??? Thanks!

Nancy

To get your Protein in first. This way, if you run out of room and have to stop at least you haven't missed out on the all important Protein which helps you to maintain muscle and lose fat. Also, the hard Proteins fill your pouch faster and sit longer in the pouch.

Just FYI - I was informed on another board that veggies ARE carbs. These are really the only carbs encouraged with the band, which are good carbs vs 'bad' carbs/starch/sugar/etc.

If you can only eat a small amount -- you need the protein! You need the Vitamins from veggies, but with a Multivitamin, it's not as important as Protein. You don't need other carbs except for energy. We have lots of energy in storage. If you try to eat mostly Protein, you'll be surprised at how many carbs you'll get anyway. Beans, cheese, milk -- all higher in carbs, but also carrying a pretty good dose of protein.

I'm always surprised at the different instructions -- or lack of them. My doctors are so strict on this point, and I've heard it so often from experienced bandsters, that I thought it was an unquestioned rule for bandsters.

I've read it here and on other lap band sites...and heard it too; but have never heard it from my doctor or the dietitian. I always heard it didn't matter about the order of the food...but what you are saying makes sense. Eve before I was banded, I felt I needed to eat the Protein and veggies first cuz of, as you say, the limited amount of food. I knew it would affect my diabetes if I ate those small amounts as the wrong type of calories. I have been so busy lately I forgot my basics. I plan to make a big effort this weekend to look through my info, plan out my weeks ...and get back to the basics. I need to get back on track. Even though I'm losing, I'm not losing as well as I can.....did great before Christmas...then the day AFTER, I got weak...broke down and had a few things that are "red light" foods for me....and now I am paying big time!

I need to get back on track. Need to start over.....before it's too late!!

Got sidetracked here, but I think maybe that's what triggered this thought process of mine!...thanks for your help!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
