I'm one month out from my modified DS and have been having abdominal pain that radiates to my shoulder and is worse when I inhale - primarily on my left side. I've also been having soft, tannish grey stools pretty much since I had the surgery.

My GP sent me for an abdominal ultrasound and they found "a small amount of gallbladder sludge" but no gallstones. I'm terrified of having another surgery - have any of you heard of this? what was your experience?

TIA!

Elisabeth

I think gall bladder issues are really common following dramatic weight loss. I had mine out when my RNY was done. Don't wait if they say remove it, a bad gall bladder is far worse than the surgery to remove it.

I lost my gallbladder years before my surgery...and I had no stones but it was so full of sludge it kinda collapsed...very bad pain in my back and around to the front...I was VERY happy to get it out! Recovery was pretty easy. My surgeon told me I ruined it from yo-yo dieting...

My first round of hcg losing 30 lbs in one month, I had a gallstone that was stuck and developed pancreatitis. I thought I was going to die. Horrible pain. I had it out later and it wasn't too bad. I haven't had any trouble since.

I had my gallbladder out two years ago after 15 years of knowing it would have to go someday. After an automobile accident, I had an xray tech tell me "Just an fyi--your gallbladder is full of stones." No symptoms until 15 years later, and then it was generalized discomfort and indigestion--I never did have a "gallbladder attack." Thank goodness!!

It's possible, even a month out, that you're still coping with gas and general abdominal surgery discomfort. Both of my previous surgeries (the other being a hysterectomy) even though laparascopic, still took a long time before I was completely comfortable again. I think because the outside incisions heal so quickly, we expect the insides are completely healed, too. But it's just not so. Keep talking to your medical providers, but try not to worry too much. Anxiety can only make it worse.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
