Pre-op Diet

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 3 - Small meal for Breakfast, AmazeRx for lunch, Lean meat & green vegetable for dinner, one more AmazeRx to top off the night.

Longhorn - I see your from Texas too. I'm north of Houston, by the Huntsville Prisons. Your area is very beautiful. I just got back from Medina Lake in the Hill country a few weeks ago. Spent a week in the Thousand Trails feeding the deer. I just loved it. I also noticed that you have the same surgery date and your in my age bracket - Cool. Good luck to you!

Howdy, Bobbi!

I graduated from Klein High School and most of my family still lives in Spring. I even got my driver's license in Conroe many, many years ago. Dripping Springs is just outside of Austin. I've lived in this area since I came up here to go to UT in 1973 and I do love it (though I'd also love to move to Colorado, especially in about August!)

Yes, we'll definitely be sharing this experience and I look forward to that!

Nice to meet you Longhorn. You were lucky enough to beat me to Texas. I didn't make it here until 1981, from California. I married a guy that was originally from Fowler Colorado but raised in Duncanville, Texas. What a hoot! Hopefully we will stay in touch. Later.

Starting my Atkins diet tomorrow for two weeks. I am motivated so I think I will do ok. Trying to get the hubby to join me but not sure if he is on the low carb "boat" with me.

My surgeon require a clear liquid diet for 5 days pre-op and 3 days post op. So to get ready for this I began a protien shake 4 Breakfast and lunch and light dinner. By next week I will do Protein shakes for all three meals. I am drinking Crystal Light in between meals.

I am peeing like crazy already, but I am not tired and feel pretty good. I do miss the chewing I think. So 2 get around that I have been chewing gum. Although I know I must stop this after surgery.....which in my opinion will be hard for me, it was I took up after quitting smoking 7 years ago....LOL

I have noticed some headaches that I was not having before, and can only contribute this 2 caffeine withdrawl perhaps, although I had stopped my soda months ago, I was still having an occasional one every now and then so perhaps I was still addicted.

I have not tried the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury yet, although I do have samples that I got at our last support group meeting. So I suppose this is the time to try them and see what is going 2 work.

I have my preop testing in the morning and the dreaded upper GI. Yeah!!

Go Bandsters!!

Kristin:)

So Protein Shakes qualify as "clear liquid" or have you found a clear liquid Protein Shake? I've ordered some unflavored and chicken-flavored Unjury that I'm hoping I'll be able to add to my Propel or broth, etc. but I'm trying to figure out exactly what I'm living on with the clear liquid because I'm supposed to stay on it for up to two weeks after surgery! Or maybe I'm living on my own fat? :)

I am doing Protein shakes now, my Clear liquids start on Nov 4th. Yes, you can do Protein Shakes on Clear Liquids as long as you do not mix them with milk. So I hear unjury is good the chicken broth one and strawberry these are mixed with Water. I am going to do Isopure that you get from GNC as well. I hear these are not bad either. There is one called profect that I hear is nasty....but a good source of Protein.< /p>

My nutritionist said the whey is best. But for now I am doing the low carb high protein Slim Fast shakes. I like them and my body tolerates them well.

I will be on clear liquid only 3 days after surgery, then full liquids for and additional 2 weeks. Clear is anything you can hold up to the light and see through, popsicles, Jello, broth, cranberry juice, grape juice, Water, protein shakes mixed with water, crystal light.

I am right there with you won't be fun but hey, as long as I am not weak I can do it.

I'm also using Slim Fast low-carb but I'm just on a low-carb diet, not just liquids. They're handy to bring to work. I can't have fruit juice until after mushies! My doctor believes the acid in fruit can be irritating. So I'll that will make the clear liquids even tougher but I can handle it. I should order some strawberry Unjury as well, since I'll be able to have that on both the clear liquids and full liquid periods of the diet.

Thanks for your input! I see from your other post that you've already been through several classes and support meetings and I appreciate you sharing what you've learned!

I go in for a nutrition class on Nov 6th and they'll be giving me the parameters for the liquid diet at that time...to start the next day, I would assume. So it'll be like a 9-day liquid diet.

Longhorn thanks for the input yourself. I have learned alot and read alot and spen many hours with others who have been banded. The program that I am in requires it.

Any time I can help I will. I know that all surgeons have different opinions and I don't necessarily think one is better than another, I would always follow what your own DR has recommended.

Longhorn and MomofChuy, I live in Texas also!! I just moved away from Austin to the Dallas area for my husband's work, but I lived in Austin for 19 years. I have family in Houston, Spring and The Woodlands. It's nice to see some fellow bandsters in the "neighborhood."

I'm starting my pre-op liquid diet today. I'm having surgery November 1st. My doctor didn't require a pre-op diet, so I'm doing this voluntarily. I asked my doctor why other doctors required it, and he said it helps reduce the size of your liver (which is usually enlarged) and it is harder to perform the surgery because they have to lift up your liver to get under it to your stomach. He says, in his opinion, that three days of liquid diet is enough to redeuce it, but some doctors require longer to make sure their patients are committed to the new lifestyle changes.

So, I've decided to put myself on a four day liquid diet before surgery. It feels good to be doing something to prepare for this surgery.

What else are you guys doing to prepare?

Rhea (pronounced ray-ah)

Hi All,

I am being banded on Nov. 5th. Went for my pre-testing at the hospital today. All went well. I am experiencing a lot of the same emotions as many of you are. I will tell you that last week I went to a support group meeting. There was about 8 ladies there and I was the only one that was going to be banded. Everybody else had previsouly been banded. Great information and they answer many of my questions.

I am on my 10-day liquid diet, start date was this past Friday. I have had a nibble here and there but nothing major. Done very well for the most part. Today I really stuck to all liquids, diet pudding, yogurt and crystal light. I have had a slight headache but I didn't have the best of day at work. Many things on my mind.

My liquid diet calls for no Protein drinks. I will incorporate my Protein Drinks after my surgery. I think I will try the unjury also - chocolate flavor. Can you mix it with Water? Or hald milk and Water? How do the Protein Bars taste? What are the flavors they come in?

I am just curious to know. Keep in touch and talk to you all soon.

Dawna

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
