My surgery was 7/24 and I am currently on my liquid phase. Everything is going well but I do have a struggle with completion of my 80 g of Protein a day! I totally understand the importance of protein in this vital step but I have a hard time getting all the grams in. By the end of the day, I can't stand the look of food. :( Anyone have any suggestions?

You just had surgery!! The first week is about hydration. I've been to my post op class after one week and a one month post op class. People there were still having hard times meeting Protein. You will get there.

I'm supposed to eat 3 meals and use 1-3 snacks-which are Protein Shakes, to get the protein in. The Snacks are only supposed to be 100 calories so if a shake is 170 cal, drink half a shake.

No way would I meet protein requirements without shakes.

Also, protein requirements are 65-80 g protien.

HI there, there are some Protein Shakes out there with close to 30 grams of protein, if you could manage 3x day, you'd hit that goal! I know that there are also unflavored protein mixes available that you're able to add to Soups and anything else you'd be consuming. Makes it easier! Good luck 🙂

I'm struggling getting Protein in also. I was sleeved 7/17. I think it gets easier with time. My main issue is taste. I just don't like them. Lol

My sleeve was 6/21. I also struggle with the Protein Shakes and Vitamins tasting chalky. My Nutritionist wants me to do 75 gm/day Protein. I think that is excessive, lucky if I get half of that. It really is trial and error when it comes to foods. Also having daily headaches, struggle to get all the Water in now, fills up too fast.

I too had my surgery on 6/21/2017. My nutritionist put me on a 60 grams of Protein. I really don't like the bariatric shakes. But I found that perimer Protein Shakes are not chalky but smooth, and they are 30 grams of protein per shake. I am in the 2nd phase with soft mushy foods and still have one more week of this phase till I move to phase three. However, phase two is a learning experience for me. I do throw up when my body doesn't agree with it or if I don't chew my food 28 times. But I've gotten smart, I now put my foods through a good processor where is greetings everything up for me so I can eat. Note: I'm only able to consume about 3 to 4oz of food, sometime less than that. But the key is to pay attention to your pouch be or stomach. Also, the main key is to get your 64 oz of Water and 2 Protein Shake before attempting to eat. Anyway, if you have any question please feel free to ask.

Thanks Monica, where do you find perimeter shakes? Any suggestion for non-chalky Vitamins?

costco has 18 packs of Premier Protein too. chocolate, bananas and cream, strawberry, caramel and vanilla. You can also buy 4 packs at Walmart by the pharmacy. Usually bottom shelf. A lot of folks use the caramel as coffee creamer. It's good!

Same here when I was in the first week. I would spend a couple hours on one Protein Drink and later a couple more on the next. Which only gave me like 40 something G Protein. I found Bone Broth (I made mine, some stores sell it) to be a huge help because it tasted good, had a little salt, and a cup has 9 g proten!

It took probably,6 days to get 60 g. But it will eventually help you get your strength back. You're doing fine. Keep it up.

Isopure is 50g x 2 scoops. Double up on any powder. I bought protein Soup mix from Amazon and I love it. Also okios Greek yogurt has 10g of protein. And you can add milk to make it drinkable and add protein

Everyone here has great suggestions!

I just wanted to say hang in there-- the first couple of weeks were SO HARD, and I was hating my Protein Shakes by the end. I didn't get enough Protein in consistently until at least a month out, and it all worked out fine. Be gentle with yourself, keep sipping Water, and recognize that you are doing great. :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
