Lifting weights hardcore, high intensity? Post Surgery

Recommended Posts

I have been athletic most of my life with weight fluctuations. I am finally taking the plunge next week when I have my surgery.

I was wondering if any one has done a high intensity weight lifting program. With the weight automatically coming off due to the surgery has anyone done a high intensity, light weight routine to try and maintain the muscle you have and tighten up the body and skin?

I am thinking of giving this a shot after the month I have to take off post surgery. Thanks.

Be sure to get clearance from the surgeon before doing any lifting. It's typically 6 weeks & you may have to start with lower weights as you heal.

The weight does not automatically come off due to surgery. The surgery is a tool and only 1 piece of the process.

Exercise is crucial to losing weight as well as maintaining. You are at an advantage, since you are already used to being athletic. If you have a routine that works for you and you enjoy, that's a huge step in the right direction.

I was cleared at three weeks to start weights but it had to be light weights in the beginning. I was quickly in to heavy weights about a week or so after that. So, as long as you're cleared and listening to your body (make sure there's no straining and pain), then you'll do great.

I've done both traditional weight training and the super slow/heavy weight reps...loved the latter. That's my plan once I'm able. Surgery, Aug 1. I loved how healthy my body felt when I lifted. I had to stop for other reasons. (Back surgery last year -ongoing chronic issue, now resolved)

I've been lifting weights since Jan of this year. I didn't bother with it and only did cardio, and then my surgeon was like, "JUST GET IT DONE NOW" so I went to the gym with a buddy, and he set me up with a small program, 3 times a week. I've seen results, but sadly I have a lot of hanging skin, so muscle is not as noticeable as I'd like.

Do it!!! But wait at least a month post op so your body can rest.

I'm excited to have my surgery (on the 23rd) so I can get back to my HIIT classes once I have to stop. Doc said 6 weeks nothing more than 10 lbs. I enjoy lifting as heavy as possible and can't wait to be on the other side because the weeks I can't will be torture.

Not to mention my 25 lb dog who will be very mad at me.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
