2 weeks post op- eating little, hard to get protein

Recommended Posts

I had my RNY on 6/26, so a little under two weeks post op.

Doing great eating soft foods. I eat about 2 oz Protein and 1 or less than 1 oz veg or fruit per meal.

shakes are my Snacks )1/2 shake per snack).

I am consuming about 400 cal per day. One day I was just under 60 g protein and a few other days I meet the protein requirement.

I have only been getting 5-7 g of Fiber. No doubt, I cannot even eat a full strawberry in one meal.

Should I be worried? How am I supposed to get my fiber up eating so little in veg or fruit?

Even protein is hard to get. I feel like I have to eat "fast" in 20 minutes to eat 2oz so I get all the protein.

Mid this normal so early when I cannot eat much?

It is normal that you can't eat that much. I was allowed to eat up towards 5 oz in one meal, but I was nowhere near that for a long time. Also, eat slow. If you are not able to get the 2 oz in, then don't eat them. Chew everything well, take your time. If you eat fast you might really stuff your pouch.

Your first priority should be Protein and water. Not fiber, fruit and veggies. Those come later when you are able to eat more food. If you have met your protein for the day, and are still able to eat something, then you can have some fruit or veggies, but not really before that.

Are strawberries allowed on your list? I wasn't until 6 weeks because it has seeds in it that can get stuck in your internal surgery wound. We all have different list though, so it might be.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein Shakes.

It is common for individuals to meet their protein and fluid requirements right after surgery. Your stomach is in a major heal mode. But just keep trying to reach your daily goals and you should soon be able to get there.

@James Marusek I have been getting my Protein in with food for a while now, and I track everything. My protein goal is only 60g a day, but I'm often over 80g or more. But, my meals are basically only protein. It is possible. There has been a lot of yogurt eaten, that's for sure. And the one I have has 11g pr 100g.

My program has had me on solids since day 4 though. I used Protein Shakes in the beginning, but not after week 3-4. 6 small meals a day it was. Down to 4-5 now. I eat max 5 oz a meal, which has been allowed since I first started.

You don't have to drink protein shakes if you meet your protein goal for the day with food, but reaching it, is your second priority, first is Water.

I am 4 weeks post op and am having a hard time with the Protein Drinks and eating. I get full off is just a few sips or bits. According to my plan I should have 4-ounces per hour. How do any of you manage?

It's all about Protein, Water, and vitamins! I'm surprised you are even allowed to eat strawberries with all the tiny seeds. Take it slow, slow, slow.

I'm 6 wks out from my gastric sleeve & hiatal hernia repair surgery. Pretty much still on the three shakes daily, so my protein's 90 gms. I can eat a scrambled or cooked egg, cottage cheese & a bit of Soup. I'm using a baby spoon & baby fork to ensure I don't eat more than a "squashed pea size amount (SPSA)" when eating & go very slowly to make my meals last. My surgeon said to cut cut cut every ounce of food that I eat & then cut some more so all are the SPSA, arrange the food starting with the beginning of the English alphabet & then take a bite. When I'm done chewing that & have swallowed, go to the next letter in the alphabet & rearrange all my SPSA's before taking another bite & keep following this code to ensure I don't eat too much too fast. This is helping me get into a pattern of eating that will keep my food inside of me. I actually successfully ate a meatball, a fish taco, and some Chinese food this holiday weekend & kept it all in, which was pretty thrilling. When a friend I was dining w asked me if I didn't like the whole spaghetti meal, I said I just had a hernia repaired & can't eat much, but totally enjoyed the meatball! I did try a banana in my shake, but it caused the runs, so I'm not using any fruit until I'm 8 wks out & will try again. Hydration isn't an issue: I've been able to have SF popsicles (yay for fudgesicles & 50/50 creamsicles), broths, Walmart's Great Value drinks (same as Crystal Lite but you get more for much less), jellos & puddings, & just recently have been able to drink H20. As long as everything's SF, I'm feeling like I'm doing pretty well. I don't have a gallbladder, so my biggest concern has been to get my Protein in & stay hydrated. I'm also a chef, but it's no longer hard for me to make meals I'm not eating: I'm not craving them or deserts thank goodness. I've been walking since the day of surgery, walking my puppy multiple times daily, use a treadmill & recumbent bike for 15 min ea & I've been teaching H20 aerobics M-F for a couple of wks now. I've just added an early am 1/2 hr walk in a park w a client & end my days at the barkpark w my almost year old Italian Cane Corso Mastiff "puppy" who now weighs 130 lbs (he's going to end up weighing 150 lbs): I walk all over the park following him or vice versa! I'm adding my Pilates Reformer exercises in this next week & yoga.

I like squashed pea size amount. My NUT told me dime size but I'm never sure in thickness. That helps!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
