What signs are common for knowing you're full or almost there? I'm 6 weeks out today and I still can't always tell. I feel hungry a lot more often than I used to. I seem to be full after 5-6 bites but then I feel hungry again soon after. But I kind of go by a feeling I get that if I put one more bite in I'm going to want to spit it out. After a few bites my stomach kind of growls like it's hungry but then a few more bites and I get that warning. Am I doing something wrong? I just ate 3 oz of filet mignonette and 1/2 of a small baked potato an hour ago and I feel hungry now. And I am losing like a pound a week - very frustrated. Help please?

Full early on = reflux, vomiting, regurgitating, nausea, pain, activated parasympathetic nervous system (thus tiredness, lethargy), etc.

Eating until full is a bad idea.

Stomach growling after eating = peristalsis, it means food is moving through your digestive system, not that you're hungry.

Fullness in the back of your throat, runny nose, excess saliva - those are my signs. Sometimes a twinge in my sleeve. Stop well before you think you're full. Foods like tortilla, Pasta, potato, rice, beef, lamb - these are for me hard to eat more than a few bites of even 7 years out. I can still eat just a few bites of the starches and only two meatballs or half a burger or a few bites of steak.

3 oz of steak and 1/2 a potato would have had me throwing up. At my stage.

You'll get there. It took me longer to learn than I care to admit. I overate a chicken sandwich the other day. I couldn't handle half, but really tried. My fault. I was uncomfortable for two hours.

Good luck,

Cheri

Thanks Cheri! Wow, 7 years out and out and you still can't handle more than a few bites of beef. Amazing. I haven't thrown up but have experienced that very uncomfortable 😣 feeling that I ate to much but it usually goes away after 20-30 minutes if I walk around a bit or take a tums. That was the first time I tried steak and I was surprised that I ate as much as I did. I guess it's just trying to figure out the signals and if it's hunger, reflux or digesting. And I wonder if I'm eating enough since I'm losing weight so slowly. Eating average of 650-700 calories, 65 -70 G Protein. But usually only get 45 oz of Water at best. Found that nutritionist has not been a lot of help - very vague with guidelines.

I'm seven weeks out this week. I tend to burp when I'm content. I get the stuck feeling in the throat and the sensation that I'm going to throw up if I eat one too many bites or eat too fast, which is most likely overeating. Are you grazing? I've also experienced where I'll eat a bit or two and feel full and be hungry a bit later when grazing--which tends to be head hunger as well. When I really listen to my hunger cues and eat properly, I am hungry about every three hours.

Oh so you're about where I am. No I'm not grazing. Sometimes I find I wait too long to eat and then I'm starving. I go back to work tomorrow so I'll be on a regular schedule again and I hope it'll be easier. A week or so ago I was getting a few hiccups or burping which was my warning to quit, but then lately it doesn't happen anymore. Just have to figure out the signals I guess. I'm wondering if it could be reflux instead of hunger? I take a Prevacid in the morning.

What do you consider slow loss? I lost six pounds a month, on average. I had long stalls of six and nine weeks and regularly lost only two weeks in a month. It took me 17 months to lose 107 pounds, and after having my daughter, 14 months to lose another 27 pounds to get down to the 118 pounds I am today.

I figure if it's working, slow loss is loss. Don't rush your body. I was a notoriously slow loser, no matter what I tried. Just my veteran advice.

Yes, I still have ridiculous restriction. Beef was the hardest Protein for me; I couldn't eat it for months. I can eat two whole meatballs or half a burger now. Maybe the whole burger, sans bun. It's good. Because successfully maintaining is that much easier with a sleeve that reminds me to stop. And if I do my job and eat protein first? Well, it's a done deal on the scale. I don't bounce around. I eat what I want, but I follow those rules 95% of the time. It works.

And as for a PPI, Prevacid is one I've seen complained about most over the years. If you can, see about omeprazole (generic Prilosec). Huge difference in controlling that hunger feeling and my heartburn.

Best,

Cheri

Not sure about everyone but when ever I eat a carb with a meal it makes me hungry. So I would suggest skip that potato and have like an allowed non starchy veggie instead.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
