Hello everyone! My surgery is scheduled for 6/27/2017 so I started my two week pre-op diet today. I am doing fine, not hungry but I have a bad headache. I was wondering if you can chew gum during these two weeks and if so, what kind?

It is not recommended to chew gum post op because the act of chewing signals the body that you are eating and your stomach starts producing digestive juices. That can lead to heartburn and worst case scenario ulcers.

Thank you! That is exactly what I needed to know.

sugar-free is always the best. Do keep in mind that xylitol and sorbitol do cause gas. Often headaches are caused by dehydration. Are you getting your 64 ounces of zero calorie beverages in each day? Try for that before going to the gum.

My drink of choice is always Water so I'm having no problem getting more than 64oz's a day. I usually carry around an Autoseal water bottle that is 24oz's. I drink about 4-5 of those a day. I am sad reading that so many are nauseous from water after the surgery. Makes me nervous because I love water.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
