Dr. Illan/ Dr. A.Ortiz post op diet support

Recommended Posts

So right now I have both Dr. Illan and Dr. Ortiz at OCC on my short list for vsg surgery. I wanted to see if anyone wanted to share their experiences on the post op diet instructions/support provided by each. What did the instructions look like? Was it clear... easy to follow?

Dr. Illan has a nutritionist that saw me briefly in the hospital and gave me a bag of goodies (mostly clear liquids), and a printout of the post op meal plan.

The plan was very easy to understand, and had a page for each week (up to 8 or 9 weeks post). There is a list of approved foods for the week, as well as a sample daily plan, including target food weights.

I was concerned pre-op by the 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, etc. This plan does it much better: 2oz cottage cheese, etc. I found it easy to follow, as much as I wanted to follow, or make it my own (sticking to the approved foods list, of course).

I kept that paper in my purse for the first 2 months, reviewing it several times a week.

Dr. Illan has a nutritionist/wellness coach who can be reached via email and telephone. She is great. The instructions you are given when you are discharged are very clear but if you don't understand something, just call.

I'm flying in July 6th and also will be traveling alone. I'm surprisingly really ok with that. I'm actually looking forward to some alone time from my busy life. Even have a couple of great books 📚 lined up to get lost in. With young kids quiet time doesn't exist in my life. 😁

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
