I have trouble eating and drinking anything, what can u eat

Recommended Posts

Hi I feel i am in a lot of trouble at the moment, i am having daily trips to the hospital for a litre of fluids through a drip, and i get to see my surgeon on Tuesday, I have been having a lot of trouble getting through to her that i can't eat or drink enough, i have 5 kids to look after on my own and spend a lot of time throwing up after eating. I had a ct scan the other day that showed the band is in place, i am losing weight but it is by starving myself un intentionally.

My surgeon thinks i am a sook basically and my dietitian thinks i am not get enough food in for me to be well.

What can you eat in a day?, i am at the point where i think it is all in my head coz my surgeon keeps saying that i think that if i don't eat i will die, and that custard, vegies and a biscuit and cream cheese is enough, although i can't even eat any of that now.

I can eat about 2 spoons of yohgurt and feel it in my chest for 20 - 30 minutes before i feel comfortable again, and that is if it doesn't come back up. I stuggle drinking more than a sip or two at a time, i don't get even 600ml of Fluid in in a day.

I was banded in may i have 2.2 mls in, i did have 3ml and i couldn't even swallow my saliva, she reluctantly took out .5 ml after 2 1/2 days of constant vomiting and in that time i lost 7kgs. She took out another .3ml a week and a half ago and that still nade no difference.

There have been times that i have been able to eat with no problems but then i would have trouble getting food in again. I am so confused, i have changed my life for this and i now exercise constantly but i am having so much trouble and a surgeon who isn't listening to me at all.

I need to know what a normal lapband diet is for others and how they feel. please i would love to get some feedback here.

Thank you

Cheers Jane

Oh gosh, that is NOT normal. You sound as if you may need even a complete unfill to settle down and then start trying to reach a good level again.

Today I've had a bowl of muesli for Breakfast, a tuna sandwich on wholegrain bread for lunch. I'll probably try to fit in an apple this afternoon and tonight we're going out for dinner, so I dont know what I'll be having.

The difference between now and pre banding is not in the foods I can eat but how I can eat them. If I eat fast, I'll be in trouble - even with yogurt.. If I eat too much I'll be in trouble. Certain foods like bread I have to be VERY careful with, but I can eat them. Occasionally a bite goes down wrong and I get stuck, sliming, pain in the chest and maybe PBing.

But I eat a diet that wouldnt cause others to even know I was trying to lose weight.

PS: I am VERY lucky. Its not common to have as much freedom as I do with my band. I think its partly becuase I exercise a lot, burn lots of calories and therefore dont have any need to be tight, I can keep my band loose. I was a volume eater, so I dont really have problems with uncontrollable sugar or ice cream or junk food cravings.

More common is to have certain foods off your list, to PB and get stuck a little more regularly than I might but still be able to eat a pretty normal diet overall.

Is there another doctor near you that you could try. You need to be able to trust your doctor to listen to you. If there are other doctors nearby I would ring and ask if they will take you on even though they didn't do your surgery.

Keep in touch and let us know how you are... we will worry if we don't know you are OK.

Danna ;)

No there is not someone near by i will have to go about 350km away to see someone else, i am going to see how i go on tuesday when i see my surgeon, i think i am going for a total unfil to give my body a chance to recover, i am scared as i don't want to put weight on again, but i also can't keep going this way, i had a really bad day yesterday every thing and anything was coming up, today i just didn't try to eat as i couldn't have another day of vomiting, i am not having fun and i don't know what to do. i would just love to feel comfortable and steadily lose weight, lets hope things will change soon. I will keep you informed.

Hi Jane,

You sound like you're having a terrible time. I hope you manage to get some help. Have you tried taking someone you trust with you to see your surgeon? Are you seeing your GP as well? Would your GP be prepared to discuss your experiences with your surgeon - might get a reaction? You could keep a journal for a week of your experiences and take it to the GP and surgeon with you. Just put down the facts, no frills and see if that will help you get a suitable response.

Let us know how you get along.

Cheers Jude

Ok here is a thought. Do you take any kind of time release capsules? I found out that they will not open and disolve if they do not get down to the bottom part of your stomach where the acid is. I was told this because i was sick and i was taking 2 a day, so i experimented and that is true they did not disolve in plain Water. Anyway i went to my doctor and told her you have got to get me on differant meds, ones i can crush. She did and i feel much better. If you think about this, the pills swell with water but do not disolve like they are made to do and there is no room in your pouch for food. One day i was only able to drink 6 oz of liquid in a 24 hour period. I knew this was not good, i lost a lot of weight at that time but it was so not worth it. Sorry to ramble but thought i would ask.

Ok feedback from my visit to the doctor, thank you for your support.

I am now able to eat again, my surgeon was good this time and i didn't have any problems with her, but that was because my body was in starvation mode, she took out all Fluid and there was 4mls in there, i thought it was only meant to be 2.2mls so idon't know where the rest came from, she replaced 1.5mls and now i feel as though i have no restrictions, it is so good to be able to eat again and not spend my time feeling so awful, i go back in about 3 - 4 weeks to get a top up and in that time giving my body a chance to recover, i still have NO energy and i am trying to replenish the fluids. So bottom line i was overfilled and there was no way things were going through.

my fear at the moment is the weight gain, but i just have to work through that and get back on top of things.

So thank you from a happier me

Cheers Jane

Cheers Jane

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
