Tips to reduce swelling?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any tips for reducing the belly swelling post-op? It's driving me crazy! My pants are tighter than before! How long will it take to go down?

Most everyone would tell you to WALK WALK WALK! And they are right! Walking really does help cut down on all the bloating you're feeling, so do it as much as possible. Even if you start at only 15 minutes a day, it's better then nothing at all! I also found it helpful to put an ice pack on my stomach at night.

Hope this helps!

Mine didn't go down until 3 weeks po (this week). It was soo frustrating to have tight pants after I lost 15lbs.

You can also try a natural swelling reducer called bromelain. They have it at the Vitamin shoppe or any other health food store. I took it for another surgery I had to reduce swelling.

walk walk walk to get rid of the bloating from gas

ice ice ice to get rid of the surgical swelling. I had an ice pack on my stomach every time I laid down for the first week. I had very little discomfort - even at the port site - and I think all that ice had a lot to do with it.

I still have some swelling down in the fascia where it was manipulated to sew the port in place. The PA in my surgeon's office says she sees that from time to time.

My post-op swelling from the gas, etc. was almost four weeks. Walking, walking, walking and ice packs.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
