Questions from a younger bigger man

Recommended Posts

Hi there, my first time on a bariatric site still pretty new to this but i had some questions/concerns. I'm "6'1' and 505 lbs at 21 almost 22 years old. I'm nervous about starting the surgery as i have heard so many issues about them from doctors. I'm beginning the start to my never ending battle of weight loss and reading some posts on here has given me some hope. The only thing i haven't seen (or if i haven't looked deep enough) is that men around my age have not gotten the surgery so as i cry for help for some support has anyone in their 20s gotten the surgery as heavy as me? I have never been a "normal weight" and looking up anything about it for men is hard. Please please help

thank you

Hi,

When I met with my surgeon's NP for the first of six monthly pre-op diet program visits in March 2016, she told me that I would likely be a model patient because I was healthy, young, and male. I'm 41 years old (40 at the time she said that), so the "young" is relative. But there is a lot of truth in what she said. It gets pointed out a lot on this site that men have an easier time of it than women when it comes to surgery and weight loss. Some people who comment on here really piss me off a lot with their lamenting about it because I feel like they act as though men who are successful aren't really busting their ass to be successful, but regardless, there is some truth to the fact that being young and male gives you an edge in this game. I say all of this to say that since you are young (as in 22 young) and male, this will likely work to your advantage.

Also keep in mind that the vast majority of WLS patients are women. I'm not sure of the number, but I want to say that it is in the 80% range (but I could be wrong). So, you're going to read way more about WLS and women than WLS and men.

I can tell you that the whole surgery process was a piece of cake for me. My recovery was swift and rather uneventful (other than experiencing some serious fatigue for a couple of months), and the weight has come off steadily pre- and post-op.

At your age, you'll kill this if you are willing to devote yourself 100% to doing what you need to do at all times. I weighed almost 400 pounds when I started this journey 13 months ago. I'm almost below 200 pounds now, and I only have about 20ish pounds to get to my goal. The same thing can happen for you if you work hard and want it bad enough

Good luck as you decide how to move forward!

I belive in the fact that you are younger then your a better candidate. The higher weight would be more concerning, but that's were the pre op comes in. I believe if you truly follow your surgeon and nutrionist advice you will be successful. I am 46, Male, started at 344 before pre op, surgery weight 334 on April 25, today 318-315, it's hard to tell with a cheap scale.

When I met my surgeon and nutrionist 6 mos ago, I started taking Multi Vitamins, started being more conscious about how fast I eat and drink, basically trying to prepare myself. Just educate yourself ask alot of questions and you will be fine.

Welcome!! It sounds like this path will be a very good one for you :)

Your surgeon will likely want you to lose some weight before surgery. Don't get discouraged by the prospect, even if it turns out to be lengthier than you thought.

Just keep in mind, every pound you lose before surgery is one that will NEVER return. This is a huge realization for most patients that have yoyo dieted for years. Also, every pound lost will make the surgery that much safer, and your recovery that much easier.

Please keep posting as your journey unfolds!

When I graduated high school, I weighed 350 pounds. I ended up losing 100 pounds and weighed 250 pounds by the time I was 22. I started to gain it back and before I knew it, I got up to 470 pounds. I ended up gaining back twice as much as I lost. I then had the surgery at 31 and am now 218 at 32. I wish I would have done it at 21. I feel like I missed out on the best years of my life and it was so hard to get restarted after gaining over 200 pounds.

Dude, get it now.
Enjoy the best years of your life.
The amount of weight you need to lose, while not impossible, will be incredibly difficult.
I am 38, I currently weigh 420 pounds.
When I was 21 I weighed 225
I now suffer from high blood pressure and sleep apnea and fatty liver disease.
My body hurts constantly.
My back hurts constantly.
I have depression issues.
I can't be active with my kids.
I am on track to get surgery in July or August.
Get it done now and enjoy your life.

It was a great decision for me. I was 49 on the day of my surgery and weighed 489. I'm 14 months post op and now weigh 295 and I'm still losing slow and steady now. I've lost 194 lbs in 14 months. The diabetes, HBP, sleep apnea, bloodwork issues and basically every ache and pain I had are now gone. I have great energy and feel wonderful. Good luck to you.

Joe, I wish that I had done the surgery when I was your age. I did my surgery in November 2015 at a pre-op weight of 518 lbs (I was 44 then). Waiting so long caused me to miss out on a lot of things that I regret. Fast forward to now, I am down 300 lbs and my experience is similar to blizair09's. Recovery went pretty smoothly and sticking to the plan has caused the weight to come off at a pretty steady clip. I do work my butt off, however. I have religiously followed my nutrition plan, even this far out, and I have completely embraced being active. This has forced me to re-prioritize things to make time to keep up the exercise. The payoff is well worth it. I can do things now that I never could have imagined before surgery. It is sad to say, but I also get treated very differently now than at my old weight. The only downside that I have seen is that buying new clothes has been expensive!

You can do this. It is normal to be nervous. I was. If you can commit yourself to make the changes called for, the rewards are enormous. Best of luck!

I echo @sgc. I graduated college at 450 pounds, lost two hundred pounds over the next two years, and then gained it all back, and then some. Ten years later (six months ago), I had the VSG. I'm now around 353 and continuing to lose. Wish I would have done this at your age.

Hey, I'm 27 and have just gotten my approval for surgery today. I'm freaking stoked about it. I've been overweight since I was like 8. I've been trying for the past few years to combat this and it's difficult. I currently weigh 455-460 depending on the scale used, and my highest recorded weight was 471. I wish I had done this last year when I first thought of it, after reading your post I wish I had done it at 21 when I was in the 380s. You've got a journey ahead of you if you're serious and while I've not had mine yet I will help in anyway I can and post op I'm more than willing to talk about my experience with you, seeing as how were close in weight and age.

Good luck!

Hey bud, just checking back in on this thread. Have you made a decision on getting the surgery? I'm at a week post-op and have gone from 427 day of surgery to 413 this morning! Yesterday I went out and hung out with friends for quite a few hours. Let me know if you've still got any questions.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
